Short Version: I fucking loved it, would love to play with people, and fuck the Handler. That last point actually has some writing thoughts below so I'll put its own section below. But yeah, I adore it and my Playstation ID is MDHWrites if you want to play. And what might help is joining my Discord if you want to do voice chat too (or plan in general).
So first the AMAZING. I adore the game. I admittedly have touched very few weapons, with my two staples (and only ones I've used) are Sword and Shield and Dual Blades. Favorite monsters probably go to the last two story ones I fought, so one is guaranteed (and I won't say so as not to spoil) and Kushala Dora. That second one may be weird because I know a lot of people don't like him, but the fact that he does environmental hazards, uses the area to its fullest rather than just staying in what may as well be the same four areas (looking at you Nergi) and just looks awesome.
Things I still have to do: I actually forgot to fight Azure Rathalos, my bad, and I still have Deviljho to go after. Outside of that, I know I have a lot of tempered versions to fight and the Behemoth. Oh god the Behemoth. And I only have found a single person who plays on PS 4 like me. *sigh* I do look forward to them though and before anyone asks, yes, I do plan to get Iceborn. I just wanted to play through at least most of the base game first, even wasn't willing to use any of the Defender gear, before I committed to Iceborn.
And finally...
The Handler
So I'm actually just going to talk about one scene because I think it highlights all of her good... and all the bad. At the end of the game, final scene, after an AMAZING speech from the leader and everyone resolutely saying we're staying, it cuts to the Handler. And... I cannot believe this was considered a good way to end the scene/game. Let me break it down since it really does go step by step on her.
She jumps up, excitedly bouncing away from the crowd. This shows how cute she is and how excitable she is. The fact that she really does adore all of this and is ready to face the challenges, or would be...
"I better put on some meat!" And here is her love for food. I will say that while every player will joke about the food being the best part of the game, part of it is because of the palicos and the bonuses it gives. The Handler seems to commonly think food is more important/exciting than monsters which attributes to her overall problem. First though:
"I need to be ready for the challenges!" Yes, because you need to be ready. Because you do SOOOOOO much for us. That's why we're always saving your ass or all you do is sit at camp and eat while we go and hunt. Theoretically, her being a damsel in distress is supposed to help us look cool and like a badass, which it often does, but when it happens so consistently it gets frustrating.
And that frustration, he lack of priorities, and perpetually chipper attitude all attributes to the fact that almost everything she does is perpendicular to what the game is about. What people love about it. The grand scale. The fact that you fight these giant monsters, enact what may as well be cutscenes in other games through gameplay. Taking these monsters down, against all odds, and that making you stronger is the thing EVERYONE tells me is why Monster Hunter is so beloved. And... I agree. Nergigante made me almost have an annuerism from it kicking my ass. This may sound like Dark Souls, but unlike that series the gameplay is actually fun in and of itself.
My opinion. I know people don't agree. There's a reason I like faster weapons in this.
How does this relate to the Handler? Well, she doesn't add to the grand scale. In fact, it takes away from it usually. She cares more about food, so you aren't talking about the monster, you're talking about what to eat. She constantly gets distracted and needs to be saved? Well, she's supposed to be our partner. The one who supports us, but instead she feels like dead weight. Her enthusiasm should be sharing in yours, but it feeds into her feeling like she doesn't care about the monsters. We should be the confidant ones comforting her fears, and the fact that she keeps helping makes her feel courageous.
*looks at Serious Handler and sighs*
But yeah, I think that's why people hate her. Or, at least, the underlying problem with her failings as a character, especially since even her good traits lead into people saying Fuck you Handler. In fact, that last scene I was talking about was the nail in the coffin that made me go from "Eh, she's not so bad," to "FUUUUUUCK YOU!" because it dropped my enthusiasm and excitement down by at least three notches while I was in the middle of a FUCK YEAH moment.
But yeah, I still love the game and I still would love to play with people so let me know if you're interested... just remember I play on PS4.
And just as a less happy update, despite my arms having felt okay for like two weeks... but just typing this has my arms and wrists feeling awkward and tingling. So despite how much I've hated myself for not typing, it seems like me not being able to wasn't an entirely bad thing. Just means I really should never stop wearing the braces to bed until I can type just fine. Sorry for the sad final point.

But the question is, what build would you be using for general hunts?
5187671 My defaults for regular monsters I didn't know weaknesses to would be the Great Girros line of weapons, while against the Elder dragons I would use the Nergal Jack, both Sword and Shield variants. However, element wise, lightning and water are dual blades realm, fire, dragon, and FINALLY ice are for sword and shield. Poison and Paralysis are also for Sword and Shield but I usually go for elements instead.
Also, just looked up the final level of Nergal Jack and... Fuck that weapon looks edgy. Final level dragon weapon will eventually be the final beasts.

...You do realize that with the way the equipment slots shake out, this line doesn't quite work properly? Just saying this as someone who started with 4U and doesn't have anything he can realistically play World on.
I mean, it's because of how similar it is to Dark Souls that I even bothered to give this series a chance. It's literally just Dark Souls but just boss fights to me.

5187728 It's a joke that I've heard others make. You hunt monsters to turn them into pants. And technically the leg slot is usually also the pants slot.

They tend to be split up between your waist and your boots, at least when you're using a male character and therefore getting actual pants instead of a skirt. Which... that's a disproportionately small amount of the player base compared to how many of them are male in real life, so I have to wonder how the meme got started especially when you consider that "hats" is funnier.
5187891 Also like hats for it, but for some reason using the word pants is funnier to me. Also, I've considered starting a file to play female just because what I've seen of their armor sets, I might like them more. Might also be a fun/good way to have me do a different playstyle/weapon set. Fast and light for the male, ranged and heavy for the female. That or I could learn the insect glaive with her.
