In the northern wastelands of the Crystal Empire, Spike the Dragon and Shining Armor stumble over a crashed, crystalline starship. One that bonds to Spike immediately, and obeys him. But it requires a few different pilots to reach its full potential. It seems resistant to magic and to magic drain, and may be possible of faster than light travel.
So Shining and Spike, both nerds, decide to explore just what this ship can do with just them and their buddies... And Princess Celestia in the know. After all, it's not fair that Twilight and her friends have to deal with every crisis or threat to Equestria, right? With this ship, they can help out too!
They recruit an elite team... Of their nerdy buddies. But all with good hearts and talents.
Doctor Hooves! Scientific officer and expert with a sonic screwdriver!
Sunburst! Magical loremaster and nerd among nerds!
Big Macintosh! Strong, tough, stalwart, and good with a sword in his teeth!
Flash Sentry! Awesome pegasus flyer, royal guard and maybe a little too into princesses!
And Snowflake/Bulk Biceps! Also strong! Fierce! Enthusiastic! And surprisingly well read masseuse!
Discord helps out as a consultant: He's used to being an antagonist to space heroes, rather than part of the crew.
And so assembled, these seven heroes control the ship and take to the stars to defend Equestria!
The ship's name? Spike christens her the Paragon.
(Which is also another word for diamond, the same things on his beloved's rump).
And the crew's name?
THE STARLIGHT BRIGADE!
Of course, they try to keep this on the down low for a while... Just so that Twilight and the others don't worry unduly. So they just pretend they're LARPing. In extremely elaborate costumes.
Naturally though... The jig is soon up.

On an asteroid controlled by an evil space lord who managed to evade Celestia and Luna's prying eyes, The Starlight Brigade fights a desperate battle!
Doctor: "Full power to the reactor core! We need to gum up the cooling systems!"
Flash: "Would love to, Doc, but we're a bit busy right now!"
Everyone else is fighting a huge alien monstrosity. Shining is using his shields like flying discs and bludgeons!
Shining: "HOLD THE LINE, NO MATTER WHAT!"
Down below, Twilight is looking around her birthday party, concerned.
Twilight: "Where is Spike? And Shiny?"
Cadence: "Oh you know Shiny: A new nerd game and he loses all track of time."
Up Above, in Space, Shining rams a cone shaped shield spell somewhere sensitive
Alien Monstrosity: SCREEEEEEEE!
Snowflake: "YEEEEAAAAAAAH!" Smashes another in the head with a warhammer
Spike is piloting the ship with Sunburst, delivering covering fire
Big Mac and Snowflake cover the Doctor while he works the controls
And Flash uses a laser sword to duel the head alien
Shining: "Spike? This would be a good time for you to get big."
Spike: "Roger!" He leaps from the ship, his Crystal armor expanding as he does
And a gigantic crystal armored dragon falls onto the monstrosity, roaring in rage
Head Alien: "HAHAHAH! Pitiful ponies! You cannot defeat me! Your doom is NIGH! Or should I say, neigh!"
Flash: "Important tip. Don't make bad jokes and take your eyes off me." He throws a control crystal to the Doctor "DOC!"
Head Alien: "What?! NO!"
Doctor: "Aha! With this crystal, I can make his ship overload in exactly sixty seconds, giving us just enough time to escape-"
And Spike smashes the alien monstrosity through the cooling system, causing the reactor alarms to go off
Doctor: "Orrrr that and we have ten seconds. Um... Run?"
Spike: "STARLIGHT BRIGADE-RETREAT!"
Shining: "Why do we constantly have Spike do his rage-out like that?"
Flash: "Because it's awesome?"
Big Mac: "Eeyup."
Sunburst: "It's very very effective."
Shining: "Both valid points."
Sunburst: "Alas, Prince Shining doesn't have the timing down just right."
Shining: "Proper timing is an art! It's not a science!"
Doctor: "I keep saying that! Nopony believes me!"
The Paragon escapes! But is hit by a shockwave as the alien mothership explodes! It spins out of control!
Doctor: "This must be a Tuesday, never could get the hang of those..."
Flash: "EVERYPONY TAKE THEIR ANTI-NAUSEA POTIONS?! BECAUSE THIS IS WHY I INSISTED ON THEM!"
Sunburst: "I did! I'm still going to throw up!"
Spike and Shining: Oh shit... It's TUESDAY! TWILIGHT!
Flash: "WE FORGOT HER BIRTHDAY PARTY!"
Snowflake: "YeEeEEeEAaaAaaAaaAAAH!"
Down below, Discord looks up boredly
Twilight: "Discord? Don't you usually game with the other guys?"
Discord: "Oh, I got tired of space operas a while ago. Had to move on! That and I wouldn't really fit the team make up. I'm a trickster, that's more of a guest star role."
Twilight: "Oh, I'm sorry-"
Discord: "Oh don't be. I'm about to enjoy the smuggest expression I've had in a while in about three... Two... One..."
The Crystal Starship is spinning out of control above them... And lands in a flying Jello-mold. Which gently lands it in the middle of Twilight's Birthday party
The hatch opens.
Shining: "Ugh... Okay... Next starship we find, I'm the captain."
Spike: "Well, this one still works... So you can have it."
Sunburst: "But it won't work for anyone but you!"
Spike: "Razzam frazzam living starships..."
They tumble out... And see everypony else staring at them.
Shining: "... We can explain."
Pinkie: "... Can I have the big Jell-O mold?"
