Fic Rec: "Flame and Fang" · 4:41pm Nov 11th, 2019
Hey, you! Yes, you, reading this right now. Drop what you're doing and go read Horizon's "Flame and Fang."
More after the break.
I've only read a few of Horizon's works, but his "Administrative Angel" is one of my all-time favorite pieces of fanfiction. It's an intimate, gutwrenching take on Princess Principal Celestia--and, more importantly, a slight AU in which she, not Luna, was the one who was exiled. It's a wonderful story, and one that should go on your "Read it now" list, if you haven't already read it.
"Fang and Flame" is the unofficial second sequel (after "Devil May Care") to "Administrative Angel." It deals with the same general premise: EqG and MLP counterparts interacting, and discovering how things went differently in the other world. However, F&F deals with Dragon Lord Ember and her counterpart--who, believe it or not, is a feral wolf. Pretty freakin' rad!
But more importantly, it's a moving story about inadequacy and adaptation. And it has some of the best combat scenes I've ever read, in any genre, period. It's also short enough that you could read it in just a sitting or two. Finally, it's criminally underrated. As of this reading, it has only about 75 views. Go read it through, and you can tell your friends you liked it before it was cool!
The one flaw with the story, IMO, is that there are a number of unanswered questions about the story. Generally, those sorts of blank spaces are my favorite parts--they let us fill in the details with ideas of our own invention--but these particular gaps are rather glaring. I can't say why without spoilers, so I'll just say that there are a few things that need expanding if/when "F&F 2" rolls around. But please, don't let that detract from the experience!
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and read that thing!!
I'm getting to it, I swear!
Oh, wait, you meant people who weren't obligated to read every entry.

Hehe! I was thinking about reading through all them myself--but that was back when there were only fifteen or so entries
Good luck!
(And, just to keep Horizon from getting into trouble: it shares no continuity with "Administrative Angel." However, it deals with many of the same themes, hence "unofficial" sequel.)
oh shit son :O
I said it over in the story comments, too, but: thank you for the recommendation! It's pretty awesome that I wrote the story powerfully enough to get you feeling this strongly.
Due to the contest deadline I released it in the middle of the night on a weekend, which is definitely not the best time to pick readers up. I'm not surprised it dodged the featurebox — there's so much timing involved in sniping readers from the front page. But knowing that readers who liked it really liked it is just as nice!
