I need some help with the umbrum! Anyone want to answer questions? · 11:59am Nov 11th, 2019
As I work on part two of Mother Moon, Daughter Nightmare I been thinking of Nightshade's "Shadow" powers. More directly if she runs across some Umbrum between shadows.
I never read the comics but I am aware of the Umbrum being key elements to Sombra's backstory that he was a half breed between a normal pony and an Umbrum. What I'm thinking is that when Nightshade shadow walks she slips into another realm the plan of shadows. Much like how the Breezies dwell in their own realm. I need more information for when I tackle Sombra (not this story).
I like to at least introduce the idea that Nightshade enters the Umbrum's realm when she shadow walks and could let some Umbrum out. It also possible the Umbrum she meets aren't the same ones trapped under the Crystal Empire. Of course, I would also have to wonder if she could free those trapped Umbrum as well.
This might be key to the story I'm writing now. I won't say more about the plot in my head so as not to risk spoilers.

Like I said I haven't read the comics just read about them via some posts about Sombra. I send you a private message to give you some intel into what I have in mind.
Part of the plot I'm working on involves Nightshade hiding in shadows. I'm trying to figure out if an Umbrum shadow pony helps the foals. If they do see Umbrum in the shadows would they be good? What would they look like? and what is the general idea of the Umbrum?
If there are any good stories about them I would like links.
They look like zombie horses with butterfly wings made out of smoke, but they can disguise themselves as what looks like flutterponies made out of smoke. Sombra is a full umbrum, the other umbrum just locked away his darkness so that he could pass through the barrier made by the crystal heart.
I haven't read the comics in some time, but this is what I remember of that specific one.

I'm going to have to think about this. Perhaps state those that were in the Crystal Empire were a different breed than the ones in Canterlot. Much like how normal ponies have Unicorns, Earth Ponies, and pegasus. Hmm, I might work with that idea. It could help explain why Sombra was Unicorn like where the others have wings. Heck, even the "Pony of Shadow" could be another Umbrum variation.

Then I'm in the same problem as before. I have a filly that can shadow walk and has shadow power. If she easily passes from normal Equestria to the plan of shadow she bound to run across an Umbrum.
I might save this plot idea for another story.

You could just make it so that the plane of shadow has different areas with different creatures in each area, and just have the umbrum on the outskirts of the plane of shadow.

Thanks. I think I will be dropping the idea of an Umbrum showing up in the story I'm currently writing. Too much to include one with all the Changelings attacking. The story plot would get way too complex.
The Umbrum are kinda of like the windeigos expect they feed off of fear instead of hate. However they are show to be more intelligent and due to being sealed have become good tricksters and deceivers. They would help you if it helped them, but not out of the goodness of their heart, though they didn’t actually betray the mare they deceived even after the curtain was up, so they seem to at least keep their word and repay their debts.
Changelings hate them because they snuff out the love of their victims so the Changelings cannot coexist with them. As soon as Chrysalis finds out she is even indirectly working with them she just leaves.
As for where the Umbrum exist, it’s in a massive prison under the crystal Empire/frozen wastes with several entrances that only the Umbrum can’t use. The only way for the Umbrum to leave is for someone to open a door in the Crystal empire.
There is some dimension weirdness there, as they don’t seem to be desynced from time but a pony stays there for a thousand years and doesn’t age a day
