Interview with Enigmatic Otaku

“Alright, now tell me, my dear friend, what inspired your username?”

Response: 

Hmm, well there’s not much of a story to tell there. The name originates from my Xbox 360 days. I made an online account, and after filling in all the necessary info, the system them asked me what I wanted my username to be. I didn’t want to be just another xxx[InsertWhateverEdgeyNameHere]xxx, so I carefully thought about it longer than I should have. I always liked the mysterious character troupe, so I decided to base my online identity vaguely around that, and I just so happened to be really into anime at the time. Finally I settled on Enigmatic for the mystery part and, because Enigmatic by itself was already taken by another user, I tacked on Otaku at the end to make the system accept it. Ever since then I’ve been going by that name since.  

“What drew you into Mlp?” 

Response:

You know, this is actually a bit of a funny story. See, back during my college days, I had this friend in my group who was really into MLP. At the time, I was vaguely aware of the show due to having seen some season 1 memes on facebook of all places, so when this friend one day showed up to campus wearing a Spike hoodie and proudly displayed it, me and the rest of the guys made jokes at his expense--giving him attention that he ate up.

Anyway, fast forward a bit. One day I was watching Netflix, and after watching Doctor Who for the millionth time, I was scrolling through all the shows, looking for something new to watch. My cursor enters the animated kids section, then stops when it lands on the first Equestria Girls movie. I paused for a moment or two, then thought to myself, “Eh, why not? I’ve got nothing else to watch, and this will at least make conversation material with Spike-hoodie friend.”

I watched the first movie, and to my surprise, I was actually liking it. I remember humming the cafeteria song to myself in the shower, then next thing I knew, I wanted context for the movie, so I decided to just start from season 1 of the actual show.

And it’s all been downhill from there. :D

“Who is your favorite pony and why?”

Response:

But… I’ve got so many favorite ponies… please don’t make me choose.

…

Fine, if you insist… If I had to name one, I’d be…

Octavia.

I don’t know what it is about her. I guess, growing up, I prefered class over “swag,” and seeing Octavia being the only other classy mare I can think of in the show besides Rarity really make me like her. She wears a bowtie, and as for my aforementioned passion for Doctor Who, bowties are cool. But it wasn’t just that; her fur color and mane style were pretty eye-catching in a show where almost every other background pony were colorful, and I always liked the idea that she lived with Vinyl Scratch in a weird, opposite/rival sort of way.

Boy howdy did I squee when the hundredth episode was released.   

“Favorite episode and why?”

I really liked the season finale where Twilight has time travel shenanigans with Starlight. That episode showed up glimpses of a whole bunch of “What If” scenarios where things could have turned out differently for Equestria. And you know what, a lot of these timelines could and have been expanded by many artists, and there’s always the potential for more. Heck, even I have a few ideas I’d like to release one of these days. 

“What inspires you to write?”

I get a small rush whenever I see people comment, upvote, or favorite my stories. I’m like, “Wait, you guys actually like my head-spaghetti?”

Now I continue to write because I hope to refine my story telling craft with the hopes of one day making something for some sort of media, be it book, comic, show, or movie. 

“Give us the background of the author! Tell us all about you. Well in a short summary.

Response:

Uh, not much to tell. I’m just a guy who likes high quality fan content. :P

“With Mlp coming to an end, tell us one thing you have learned from your experiences, and how it has helped you to grow?

 Response: 

You know, as you get older, things seem more and more complicated, and therefore the solutions have to be equally as complicated. But, after watching a show like MLP, and making life-long friends along the way, you learn that not everything has to be that way. Sometimes the most tangled of life’s messes can be undone when you take a step back and remember some cliche, but actual helpful advice from a children’s show and friends.   

“Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Response:

Aside from telling you all to check out the fine men, women, and Pencil, of the Barcast, I really, REALLY need to up my horse-word game.
