Hello everyone, sorry if I haven't been able to keep this on a weekly basis but I've been quite busy lately with my stories and also with college, mostly with college though. But I've got some news and a few thoughts to share, so let's get into it.
First off, Rekindling the Flames has exceeded 3,000 views! The first chapter is also getting real close to hitting 600 views. This is all really exciting for me and I can't wait to see it hit another milestone.
In a similar vain, I will be expanding Rekindling over to my DeviantArt page. Now if you're hopping over there hoping to see some art, well curve your enthusiasm. I'm not an artist in any sense. Anyways, I'll be putting Rekindling over there and I will also be submitting future stories there as well.
Second, chapter 9 of Rekindling is currently in the works right now, but unfortunately it's not close to being done. I'm about to hop back to it's google doc and continue work on it. As far as release dates go, this one is looking to be released by Wednesday at the latest. I was hoping to get it out by Monday but, like I said, college has kept me pretty busy lately. But I will not abandon this story because, much like many of the readers, I am very much enjoying this story and I can't wait to see where it takes me.
Now if you're just here for the story updates, that's all I have to say. This next bit is going to be about some very recent news about the EQG franchise.
So according to the most recent Equestria Daily news article about Equestria Girls, according to EQG Director K. Hadley in a series of twitter posts, Sunset Shimmer is apparently bisexual. I won't be giving a summary of the article, really just my response to the news.
Now before I say anything, I want to make it perfectly clear that I believe that whoever you love is who you love. My belief about other people's sexuality is perfectly summed up in this line from Luke Bryan's song Most People Are Good, "I believe you love who you love, ain't nothing you should ever be ashamed of." So when I deliver my thoughts about this news, just know I'm not trying to say anything out of spite, it's just me trying to wrap my head around it. That being said, let's get into this.
Personally I have no problems with Sunset being bi, in fact as a shipper I'm glad she's bi. Because I know if she was canonically just straight or just gay, then that's a lot of ships that will get sunk. Her being bi keeps those ships afloat, it makes me happy because Flashimmer is my OTP, go figure. So if she came out as just straight, it be a yay for me but a massive boo for all the Sunlight, Appleset, Sunset Dash, etc. shippers, and vice versa. However, I do have one or two qualms with this reveal and both are about how it was delivered.
So when it comes to story telling, as a writer you have to balance the line between showing and telling. How much and what information needs to shown or told. This reveal, should have been a show, not a tell. This is big info and you can't just drop this info in a twitter conversation. If you're going to reveal Sunset's sexuality, put it in the show, books, or comics. Don't be J.K. Rowling and drop it in an out-of-the-blue tweet.
I also don't like how this reveal essentially came out as, more or less, an attempted spite towards the straight shippers. The reveal came as a response to a tweet by Wubcake:
"I don't care who you ship but.. Anyone else notice a lot of TimberTwi/Flashlight/Flashimmer shippers are homophobic? O.o I've seen sooo many.. I mean I've met good people who ship it but omg."
Now I've made it clear about my stance towards other people's sexuality, but I do need to say that I tend to preference the straight ships. I don't know why, I've tried getting on board with some gay ships but they just don't click for me. Again, I don't know why, it's just how I'm wired. So when I read that tweet from her, I felt a bit hurt. In all honesty, the way it came across to me, it sounded like "not all straight shippers are homophobic, I know a few good ones, and they're not like them." I don't know if that was her intent, I don't want to think it was. Wubcake is one of my favorite VAs and reading her tweet was a little bit of a gut shot. And then Hadley making this reveal, it feels like it was just made out a spite towards the small group of homophobic straight shippers and not made in genuine support for the LGBTQ+ community. This whole reveal has just been a mess.
I highly doubt that she'll read this but, Wubcake, I hope you know that those homophobes are not the majority, and just a vocal minority. Most of us just prefer Flashimmer and could care less if you ship Sunset with Twilight. Most of us are content with a live and let live policy. Most of us just prefer the straight ships because reasons, not because we hate the LGBTQ+ community. I'm not going to hate you because of a single tweet, that would be immature of me, but you have lost a bit of my respect.
I don't know y'all, in my opinion this whole reveal has been a complete mess. The new info is not bad at all but the way it was poorly handled and improperly delivered. I was hoping to end this on a good note but, well there's not much good off of this time around. But anyways, I'll see you guys next time. Tops to you!
