Stopped at 9:20... Going to watch the movie tonight!
Excellent analysis!
I wouldn't call all of this exactly new—I can't watch Hereditary without Rosemary's Baby coming to mind, and not just in terms of plot—and I have some issues with the writing in the second half, but I cannot deny that it's a brilliantly shot and directed film. The 'comedy palette' is an interesting insight. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Maybe it's just that I'm old enough to see the same old stories come around (even excluding remakes, reboots, and outright theft), but I am constantly impressed by the superb craftsmanship of the visuals of movies*, while mostly being disappointed in the writing/storytelling.
Not that there aren't splendidly written stories out there, but they're a small fraction of the total. There are nut-and-bolts factors involved in storytelling just like any other craft... why don't most writers seem to grasp them?

* And of course, I just though of several exceptions, but my point still stands.

I have that feeling constantly. It's become a major issue in horror films, especially.
Okay... wow. You're right, the acting blew me away as much as anything else.

I think part of it is the direction - being told "make it look real" and "make it look good" are two entirely different requests. Good is rarely real, real is rarely good.
But because it allows the actors to commit to 'real' for the whole thing, you get some seriously unnerving performances you just don't see in anything else.
Also, fun fact, the kids were actually childhood friends or something of the sort, and they'd worked with the actor who played the Dad before. The only member of the core family who was actually a stranger was... the mother.

Wow, that works out perfectly for the roles! I'm not a big fan of horror, and particularly this sub-genre, but I can appreciate the incredible craftsmanship and artistry that went into it. Thanks for calling it to our attention!
