So I Just Watched the Season Premiere...

The Crystal Empire was beautiful. I liked the designs of this new subspecies of pony, too. And it was nice to see Cadance again.

King Sombra, (Sombre?) didn't really do it for me as a villain, though. I'm not sure why. Maybe he just wasn't characterized enough. I mean, with Nightmare Moon, the mane six had to chase after her. She made a nice speech or two and really interacted with them and caused trouble in the Everfree. With Discord, he interacted with the mane six on numerous occasions, and we really got a feel for who he was. And Chrysalis? Same thing. Sombra just felt like mindless evil. But maybe that was the intent.

i guess i'll give you a meta analysis to help you understand the situation. the reason sombra wasn't as big as the other supervillians was because he wasn't the center of the episode. the episode had sombra revolve around the plot while the other villians had the plot revolve around them. the main attraction of this episode was the crystal empire not sombra.
