    The end of an era

Some may think I'm talking about Friendship is Magic ending later this year. And that is also the end of an era. But while everyone was looking forward to that, another era ended entirely by surprise. It turns out that "Sunset's Backstage Pass" was the final Equestria Girls production produced by DHX. The license has been turned over to Boulder Media, whose plans for the franchise are unclear.

    The Mysteries of Maud Pie

It's been a long time. I have a new story, The Mysteries of Maud Pie. Nothing super fancy or ambitious here, just a short story I belted out pretty quickly based on something very personal to me.

    Forgotten Friendship (spoilers)

A new Equestria Girls special! And it's.... ah... aaaauuuugh! AAAAAHHHHHHHUUUUUUUUGH! This special is what I will call a "mixed bag".

On the one hand, it had some fantastic emotional and character-pushing moments.
    1: Sunset's confrontation with Celestia.
2: Twilight wigging out in the forbidden section of the library.

He's gonna take you back to the past

I looked up recently and realized that it has actually been YEARS since I've watched any of Season 1. I was curious to see how it would hold up after all of the advancements in storytelling and graphics that have taken place over the years, so I selected a few of my personal favorites for revisiting.

The end of an era · 4:36am Jul 28th, 2019

Some may think I'm talking about Friendship is Magic ending later this year. And that is also the end of an era. But while everyone was looking forward to that, another era ended entirely by surprise. It turns out that "Sunset's Backstage Pass" was the final Equestria Girls production produced by DHX. The license has been turned over to Boulder Media, whose plans for the franchise are unclear. Effectively, the Equestria Girls as we know them are already finished, aside from whatever webisodes may be left to finish out Season 2.

It's easy to see EqG as the "little sister" to FiM, but it made it almost 6 years on its own, which is nothing to sneeze at. It started on shakey ground, but even back then I could see the potential in the new character Sunset Shimmer, a pony from another universe who has to live in an alien world and learn to be good, and for the first few years the show did a good job of following this up with Rainbow Rocks, Friendship Games, and Legend of Everfree. In my opinion these three movies make up the pinnacle of Equestria Girls' time in the limelight, and while the remainder has its high points, it was never quite able to muster the ambition or drive to pull off the superhero-lite theme of the prior movies. Still, the characters remain engaging, and it will be sad to see them fade away.

Still, it's not entirely the end. If I know anything about this fandom, the girls (human and pony) have at least a good five years left before the fans let them go, and who knows? Maybe they'll make a comeback one way or another. In the meantime though, thanks for the memories DHX, and I hope your inner-peace continues well into the future, Sunset Shimmer.

That's disappointing. It was a good special, though.

I would have preferred a proper finale for Equestria Girls, like what FiM is getting, but I can’t deny that it had a good run and could practically be considered its own series.

My only serious regret was that nothing was ever done about the looming problem that was Timber Spruce. That jerk stole Flash’s spotlight and kinda screwed him in the process. At least Flash still got some decent screen-time, but I still consider Legend of Everfree to the worst Equestria Girls had to offer.

We needed a proper finale like them graduating and moving on to their futures.

Hey, you're still alive!

Honestly not a big loss anymore. Hasbro did so many mistakes with EqG especially after LoE. I personally stopped watching it after Rollercoaster of Friendship. The first special was still pretty cool but this one was already really meh... And don't let me start with these shorts. Seriously, they should have kept the concept of releasing a movie every year or at least releasing full 22 minute episodes instead of this. You just can't build up a good and interesting story in a 2 minute short, you don't get any character progress there, they can't introduce some new characters who are actually pretty cool, the topics of these shorts are never really interesting and all in all they're just not so fun to watch like real movies or episodes. And then 90% of these shorts are always about the same characters. Always the Mane 7. I was so surprised when I heard the Dazzling are getting their own short. But still, what's about all the other characters who got introduced like the Shadowbolts? Hasbro already wasted them pretty hard in FG but then they don't even give them their own short? Nope, let's just make 50 more shorts about the Mane 7! I get it that they are the main characters but it would be so much more interesting if Hasbro would actually care about their other characters too.

All in all I'm actually pretty glad that it probably ends now too. It's far away from being interesting now anyways which is really sad since I used to love it pretty hard.

Still sucks that it doesn't get a proper final.
