"One small step for man, and one... giant leap for Mankind."
It's been fifty years to the dot since those fateful words. ...Oh god, I wish I had a better speech prepared for this. It wasn't just a small step, it was the small step. For the first time in god knows how long, humanity stood united and sadly, I don't think we've been quite as united ever since. For just a few brief moments, everyone's minds were connected to the same hope and dream.
Today pretty much marks the start of the space program as we know it now, and look at where we are now. We're going to Mars, and we're going beyond. We've had pictures of black holes, we've seen pictures of planets as we never knew we could see them. We're thinking of going off-world and colonizing other planets. We're thinking of contacting alien life. Point is, we've come so far, and despite whatever you think of humanity devolving since we chose to do this, not because it was easy but because it was hard. And ever since, we've had our hearts and minds trained to the stars... Sure, we've stumbled and we've had our failings, but I ask you... where will we be in the next fifty years?
hip hip hooray
I hope Space X or Blue Origin will one day take Collins and/or the crew of Apollo 13 to the moon they deserve the right to go. As one of the greatest shows says, “Space the final frontier”.
