Also known as Maundy ("Command" in Latin) Thursday, this night of holy week marks the time when Jesus and His disciples ate the Last Supper before His Crucifixion. Matthew 26:17-29, Mark 14:12-25, Luke 22:7-38 and John 13:1-14:31.
2 And 1supper being ended, dthe devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing ethat the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He fhad come from God and gwas going to God, 4 hrose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, i“Lord, are You washing my feet?”
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you jdo not understand now, kbut you will know after this.”
8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”
Jesus answered him, l“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and myou are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For nHe knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.” (John 13:2-11)
26 uAnd as they were eating, vJesus took bread, 3blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; wthis is My body.”
27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, x“Drink from it, all of you. 28 For ythis is My blood zof the 4new covenant, which is shed afor many for the 5remission of sins. 29 But bI say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on cuntil that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:26-29)
22 nAnd as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, 6eat; this is My obody.”
23 Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the 7new covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” (Mark 14:22-25)
14 iWhen the hour had come, He sat down, and the 2twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it juntil it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for kI say to you, 3I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 lAnd He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My mbody which is given for you; ndo this in remembrance of Me.”
20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, o“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you." (Luke 22:14-20)
Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, commands them to love one another, to follow Him, and to "Do in remembrance of [Him]." The Passover institution was fulfilled in the Son, who shortly thereafter would suffer His passion and crucifixion to save us from our sins. In His death, our sins are defeated for all who put their love, faith, and trust in Him. Blessed be His name forever and ever! Amen.
