Standard Manufacturing's DP-12 (shotgun) · 9:49am Mar 24th, 2019
In the previous post regarding my Mosin-Nagant, I mentioned “I plan to purchase a semi-automatic Ruger 10/22 Takedown as my next rifle”; howbeit, I decided against purchasing that gun since practicing & plinking with a rifle I cannot reliably shoot for both fun & self-defense (such as a rifle chambered in the small .22) ultimately doesn’t appeal to me. Also, my bolt-action Mosin-Nagant fires slowly, its weight & length makes it unwieldy, it sports a stiff safety, & its round (the powerful 7.62x54R) could easily penetrate & pass through a target causing unintended damage to property or people behind the target; thus, it seems unreliable for self-defense.
After learning about the DP-12 (shotgun) from Standard Manufacturing & Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing, it appeals to me greatly as an alternative. That firearm’s shorter length (a result of its bullpup design) attracts me, & its significant weight (on par with that of my Mosin-Nagant) reduces its recoil & unwieldiness to increase accuracy; the stock’s built-in, spring-loaded butt-pad further decreases recoil. Additionally, unlike many popular shotguns, it incorporates two barrels so the shooter spends less time reloading & can quickly fire two shots in succession; the DP-12 can carry 14 shells, in contrast to standard shotguns that hold seven.
Plus, the idea of a double-barrelled, pump-action shotgun comically confuses many veterans of the gun-world who are accustomed to correcting people that think such a thing is commonplace (based on misleading media such as the fictional weapon wielded by Szyslak in the Simpsons). To my knowledge, the DP-12 serves as the first of its kind.
It also shares one of the two reasons the Ruger 10/22 Takedown appealed to me: “I can purchase [American-made ammunition] for it whilst recycling money back into the United States' economy, instead of funneling funds overseas to a foreign country [by purchasing 7.62x54R rounds].” Howbeit, shotgun-shells prove more expensive than both .22LR & 7.62x54R; so, the Ruger 10/22 proves more appealing in that regard. ;P
Regarding price, the DP-12 itself proves far more expensive than a Ruger 10/22 or 10/22 Takedown in accordance with its design as a military & law-enforcement weapon: its MSRP remains around $1,200-1,400 as a significant investment. I found it for sale on CheaperThanDirt, Classic Firearms, Bud’s Gun-Shop, & Standard Manufacturing’s website.
