I decided to place my longest story in the Mature category

Mostly out a feeling that in the end, I have noticed that ideas regarding teen being the only rating people would notice to have gone straight to oblivion.

Especially how much I just go ahead and just add it in. At least that way it would be taken more seriously and deter people that thought it was as something lighter.

Eh, I doubt this will help with things. See, now I look it and see "gore, violence, death, mature" and I think I'm in for ponies being torn limb from limb screaming until their head gets punted aside to watch their body become chunky salsa and chewy bits from afar a bit before merciful oblivion overcomes them, every other chapter, but I have a strong feeling that's not the case. Teen helps me temper my expectations.
I've had the story on my "Read it later" list for a while to find out exactly if it's the kind of dark edgy gore I like to read, by the way.

Ultimately, I don't like that FiMfic tagging is per-story (nothing per-chapter) and ridiculously vague ("gore" could mean "someone is implied to get cut in half once" or "an entire crowd of ponies are reduced to bits and pieces systematically", and everything in between).

There are brutal and gory deaths, but for the most part, they happen quickly. And some of the most disturbing stuff tends to be mutations and horrific monsters. In a way, you can consider this closer to a mix between John Carpenters "The Thing" and Wolfenstein-ish or Hard Boiled like to the violence and subject matter. Not to mention all the mindbending insane psychological and Lovecraft craziness.

It's very much an 80's R-Rated Movie script in nature, with its odd mix. I rated it teen at first bassed in that I watched such movies around 15 without much issue.

I don't exactly go for the slow ripping off arms it tends to happen quite fast, the screaming is after the arms are there for a couple of seconds before the pony, passes out from the pain and starts bleeding-out.

And in all honesty, there is going to be some Cronenbergian shit like this fairly soon.

Oh, then M probably is appropriate. It's a little unclear with the help FiMfic provides, but to my understanding, Teen gore generally shouldn't involved showers of blood or ponies torn limb from limb, with decapitations about the max.

The chapters tend to be long, and there is plenty of buildups. No jump scares, false jump-scares, but plenty of periods on underlying dread. Not to mention the indication of plenty of fates worse than death... The dead are the lucky ones in a way...
