Exert from Shock and Awe · 10:59pm Nov 6th, 2012
"... Twilight. Please don't go ... Y-you don't have to do this. There are other ways."
Twilight looked over her shoulder at the other alicorn. Rainbow was crying softly. And it was that alone that nearly made the decision for her. Nearly made her stay. But then the memory of the atrocities at Manehatten floated back to the forefront of her mind. And just like that her resolve hardened and the choice was made. She had to do it, had to make this sacrifice so that others didn't. That was her destiny. She turned to face her lover, tears of her own slowly rolling off her cheeks.
"Rainbow, did I ever tell you about my great grandfather?"
Dash stopped sobbing momentarily. "Wh-what?"
"My great grandfather, on my mothers side."
"No. I don't think so. Wh-what does that have to do with things?"
"... everything Dash. Everything. I only met him once, and I was very young, but I remember him and that day. See, he was a veteran of the last Griffon war. And a war hero. Celestia herself honored him. He was a very proud pony. Very devoted to duty and honor. But the one time I met him, shortly before he died, he told me a poem. A poem he wrote himself. One that he would sing to himself in battle to find courage, to find the reason he fought. Over the years I had almost forgotten. But now I remember. And now I know."
Rainbow Dash was silent for a moment before she spoke again. "Know what Twilight? What poem, what are you talking about?"
"You do not truly live, until the moment of your death
Do not appreciate air, until you draw your final breath
For there is no light, without shade
The life worth lived, with one foot in the grave
Not for the yesterday, to hell with the morrow
Your happiness defined, by those others sorrow
The perfect moment, at the edge of horizons frozen
Live in the present, until violently stolen."
Dash started to cry again. "Wh-why?"
Twilight turned back to the window to admire the sunset. "I've never noticed quite how beautiful Equestria was ... until now."
Ey? Ey? Did you like? Huh? Did ya? Well that is an exert from about halfway through Shock and Awe. Yes, that means I have written about halfway through. But do not expect updates soon. I am very busy. And even though I have a lot written, I am pretty guarded over it. I can't seem to want to share yet. So I don't think I'll be sharing until it's finished (God only knows when that will be) so be patient, and carry on.
