Africa A to Z Facts!: Day #12: "L" · 8:09pm Feb 12th, 2019
It continues my friends, let's get into our next letter:
L is for....Lion!
*Lions tend to live in family groups of between 10-20 called Prides.
*A female lion usually needs about 11lbs. (or 5kg) of meat daily. Males need 15lbs. (or 7kg) daily.
*In the pride, the hierarchy usually is as such: One Alpha male. His chosen female. A group of other lionesses, often relatives or friends of the alpha lioness for the hunting parties. A small amount of other males (usually a male relative of the Alpha male and is usually about 2-3 other males along with the alpha male for added protection). Lastly the cubs and or juveniles, not yet ready for the hunting parties.
*Lions are the only big cat that actively live in a systematic hierarchy family group.
*Due to poaching and illegal trophy hunting, the Lion population is dwindling rapidly in Africa. There are currently approx. between 20,000 and 39,000 lions left in the wild.
*Lions have been used in human culture for centuries! From the famed (and horrid) gladiator fights in Rome to classic Animated/Live-Action films and in modern society (ex: Aslan from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Simba from The Lion King and the NFL Football team the Detroit Lions).
