Test fic-reading: The Maretian Sol 6 · 4:21am Jan 7th, 2019
I've been toying with the idea of doing fic readings for a while. The thing is, as a narrator my voice is... servicable, at best. But as a voice actor trying to imitate existing voices? ESPECIALLY female ones? I'm utterly useless. I'm no good as a mimic- never have been.
So I'm not likely to continue this one, and I don't think I'll be doing more fic readings unless the story's cast is predominantly male.
But other people have asked about doing music, radio plays, and audiobooks for The Maretian. And I'd love that. I'd love to be able to listen to this in my car driving places.
But I don't want to listen to my own voice doing it.
And for those of you doing readings: please listen to this, and get the pronunciation of "Amicitas" right. The accent is on the second syllable, and the C makes an S sound and definitely not a CH.
Thanks, all.

Got it.
It's a shame, you have a wonderful voice for narration: the acting, the tempo, the pauses, the enunciation... everything is just right except for the one or two minor stumbles along the way. And the recording quality was top notch as well.
IMO, and this is to all the prospective narrators out there as well, you really don't have to worry about mimicking existing or female voices as long as long as they can be kept consistent. And while distinct voices would definite be a nice thing to have, in most cases us listeners will be able to tell who's speaking just from the context, same as those who read the story.

Oh *haycrackers*! I've been saying it wrong all this time.
To be fair, when stories I read on places like audible, they don’t tend to change the picture there voice to match a female voice you’re just meant to assume it’s a female voice speaking. It be really cool to see comic book shorts of certain scenes but I know which that would take effort
Kris you have an awesome voice. I am completely incapable of pronouncing the ships name. Like at all, I tried for a solid 10 minutes and I got nothing so yay.
I just listened to the first paragraph you read.
I have only one complaint about this.
That is, I can hear your in-breathing, and that is annoying.
You either need better equipment or better audio editing for this to properly work.
Other than that, your voice works perfectly so far.
Very nice! You have an excellent reading voice! As an avid fan of audiobooks of every kind, your skill is excellent. As for mimicing.. don't. Focus on reading the character and just lightening your voice a little. You don't /have/ to sound like the character, just a bit different. Not camp, but just a big different. Looking forward to more of your work!
Oh, I'd listed to the audiobook. But I'd think for that to be a success we'd need that abridged version of the maretian first.
4992579 4992671 This recording was done using a cheap gaming headset- about forty minutes for a first reading, then about as much time again editing out the major fluffs that I did a repeat take on. If I were doing this for "official" release, I have a proper microphone with a pop shield to get rid of things like, for example, breathing noises.
4992518 4992601 Technically ah-MEE-cih-tas, but every time I actually say it I use schwa for the last two vowel sounds.
Well I rather liked it (even though I learned I'd been pronouncing their ship's name wrong this whole time).
A good audiobook can be done with even just one person. I've been listening to the Game of Thrones audiobook, and it's just one guy reading it and he does all the voices himself.
I rather liked liked how you read this. The pace was good, and I think your voice is well suited for narration.
Also, learning I was saying Amicitas wrong this whole time was very much a surprise.

Apparently so have I!

I've been saying it as "Am-ee-CHEE-tas" in all of my recordings. Well, no longer. I'm not going to go back and re-record anything, but I will say "ah-MEE-cih-tas" from now on.
For voice lines of the characters without narration, I'm working on this:
What kind of accent are you giving Cherry Berry? Something southern? I still really enjoy doing Fireball's gravelly voice, even if that's not what you had in mind originally.
4995575 For some bizarre reason, half the times she's been given spoken lines in the show, Cherry's had a vague Bronx or Brooklyn accent. In any case, she tends to have a pronounced squeak in her voice. It's definitely not intended to be Southern. I did what I could with my very limited talent for mimicry.

Funny you should mention Cherry's spoken lines in the show. I made a compilation of them. https://soundcloud.com/dogman15/sets/cherry-berry-clips-long-and-short
Soundcloud embed seems to be broken, but I think you're remembering Cherry's lines in "Putting Your Hoof Down", the Iron Will episode. Where she's on the bridge with Bon Bon. Cherry sounds like she was voiced by Tabitha St. Germain in that episode.
I like this very much, think you can continue?
5013558 Thinking about it. The computer I recorded that on just went south, though, so I'll have to make some adjustments.
And since even this sloppy test took three hours, doing it properly on a regular basis would, to be blunt, require income.

Oh, I see.
