The grey mare - update (a little better?) · 9:18pm Nov 8th, 2018

I am tentatively hopeful but don't want to get my hopes up too much. The discharge has lessened and the consistency of it has broken; it is no longer as persistent as it was yesterday. I'm hoping that the bute will do its job and we'll put her on steroids or something else powerful to get this nuked once and for all. As the pus that came out before was tested and came back with nothing (no bacteria, nada), I'm hesitant to say that it's an infection but she must still feel quite sore in her head. I'm getting rather sick of pinning 17hh pony that thinks she's a giraffe down to look up her nose as if for extra hairs and I think she's well enough had enough of it too. The cleaning out of her nose is just as "entertaining" as I'm using baby wipes at the moment and she has a fantastic "I will cut you bitch" look. Mare-face ain't got nothing on this one. I was told that, when she was at the vets, they tried to give her a sloppy mash after sedation (a nice thing) and she looked at them like they were trying to poison her.

If she has the stitches out in a couple of days, we should be able to work her at least with a headcollar on and the exercise should help keep the blood pumping and the sinuses draining. Not sure if the bridle I have (basic cavesson) is suitable as it may cause irritation on the site of the stitches so I'd probably give that a little longer to heal up before using either that or the cavesson. The vet did say that we could take the noseband off though and perhaps that will soften the pressure/movement on her cheek enough (as we'd remove a strip of leather) to not aggravate the zone, we'll see.

I'm very much hoping at this point that we're not going to do a CT scan but there is a dental/sinus expert that I think will be in the area in a couple of weeks time, though I may need to bribe a favour off a friend to get there. They are already looking over the xrays so that's something at least.

Short update, but she's behaving normally and scoffing all of her feed and hay. Nothing weird catching my eye otherwise, although I feel like she's on ridiculous feed (I've started her on bloody coconut meal as I realised the popular weight gain feed I had her on had so many additives and crap that it wasn't actually good for their digestive systems). Spoiled. Needs to put a little bit of weight on still but I was expecting her to be a bit on the ribby side after the surgeries and lack of appetite.

A couple of very, very, very lovely people have sent a "donation" for her, which was completely unexpected and very, very, very thankfully and gratefully received, although I stress that I am not requesting or fishing for donations. I am, however, open for commission work and have the eBooks for sale if you would like to do anything to help! Keeping the work trucking on keeps my mind busy and everything ticking along as I (fingers crossed) hope she recovers. Commission and eBook details are all below and I've just put out a new gryphon on gryphon eBook today too!
