Darkest Dungeon Ponyfic Update · 6:26pm Oct 23rd, 2018
I haven’t really given any updates since early September regarding my Darkest Dungeon ponyfic, so I figured I’d put one out there for those of you who were still interested:
So, I’m on chapter 11, and just breached 40k words. It’s pretty visceral (figurative and literal) compared to some of the other fics I’ve done. Now, as far as percentage of the story completed... I’m at 9 / 60 major plot points achieved. That’s only 15% of the way into this monster—and it is a monster—after about two months of work. And what exists hasn’t had a full edit yet.
Right now, I’m looking at several more months (maybe years ) before this thing is done. So, I find myself wondering if I should just start releasing chapters once I’ve gotten to major benchmarks in the story; releasing them in a manner where I post chapters in relatively quick succession up to a each of those benchmarks.
I would like some feedback on whether I should do that. I was originally content to just toil in secrecy on this thing, but I am worried about waiting now that I know that this is not just going to be a 3-4 month project.
Does anypony think that I should start releasing chapters once I’ve gotten the story to those certain benchmark spots? Or should I wait until I can guarantee consistent Chapter posting up until the fic completes?
Even if I do start posting once I’ve reached a major benchmark, it is still a month or two off from happening.
Just an update, and just checking on opinions out there. I am creating this to be viewed, after all.
it might be helpful if you release chapters once they're done, leave your audience wondering what will happen. The benchmark would likely be the time
Well hey-hey-hey, I've got some experience with longfic release schedules!
With mine, I suffered from a lack of completeness in my vision. Even though I knew approximately how it ended, there were tons of holes in the middle, and even a fair amount of squishiness at the end. So for me, it would've helped to start with the understanding that I should write the whole thing out before releasing stuff, because part of what I needed to do was find my way there.
Your project and situation are fundamentally different than mine. You've got a reasonably detailed outline, it seems like you know how it's all going to go more-or-less, and you can always crib from the game as source material if you get stuck. I'd say that reduces a lot of the risk of getting out of your depth and bogging things down if you choose to release as you go.
With that said, one reason to hold off on releasing chapters is that there can be more stress with having a partially-finished story hanging out there in the ether. Until you release, your brain can categorize the project as "that thing I'm working on." After you release, your brain might recategorize it as "oh crap it's been a month since the last chapter, what's wrong with me, I need to get something out, aaarrrgghhh."
If you can avoid that, then post away. But as it turns out, I can't quite.
