Thoughts on "A Rockhoof and a Hard Place" and "What Lies Beneath" · 3:49am Sep 23rd, 2018
Well, had a crazy week, so I ended up forgetting to do the Rockhoof episode until it was too late. So... double feature.
A Rockhoof and a Hard Place
On a weird, somewhat related tangent, I had an easier time getting a new job after losing my old one, and I only spent a week unemployed. So, thinking about this episode was a little surreal to me, expecting my life to be just going around trying to find a new job like Rockhoof when the exact opposite happened.
Episode was pretty funny, and yet sad at the same time, with all the shenanigans of Rockhoof trying so hard to find a new purpose in modern times. And then he asked Twilight to turn him to stone, which just about every adult watching this show, me including, took as an allegory for suicide. I had to pick up my jaw off the floor before the dog snatched it.
And while I don't care for Yona (she's a Yak stereotype; a tolerable one, miraculously, but still a stereotype and that bores me), it was kind of nice to see her fangirling over Rockhoof and help him out of his funk with the other students.
So, uh... yeah. It's a good episode.
What Lies Beneath
So, I have had this headcanon that the Tree of Harmony's roots are spread out all throughout Equestria, just deep enough underground in most places that nopony notices. I'm not saying that this episode confirms or denies my headcanon (I don't think it really does either), just something I wanted to share. Because how much power does that thing have and what else can it do?
So, this thing got me to better arrange how I feel about the Student Six. I really like Ocellus, Smolder, and Gallus; Silverstream, while her constant excitement about everything wears me down (somehow, Pinkie only does this in her worst moments), she's an alright character that I do have sympathy for because of the whole Storm King thing; and I don't really care for Sandbar and Yona.
Also, more fuel for the Gallus/Silverstream ship, it's getting more adorable every time I see them together.
So, another solid episode, that gives character development to those kids (even if I still find the yak and the pony "meh" at best).
And reminds us again that Cozy Glow is evil.
Well, there's our two episodes. Hopefully, I don't have to do another double feature this season.
