Cracking the Equestria Girls Timeline · 7:04pm Aug 14th, 2018
So I was talking to some of the other writers involved in the Beanis Cinematic Universe and I posed the question I asked here a while back "why can we accept characters from adult shows like the Simpsons and Bob's Burgers having characters who don't age but insist that kids shows adhere to that rule?"
There was discussion back and forth, but during that discussion something came up which might actually fix every problem everyone has with the timeline of events for Equestria Girls.
We've all been assuming that Canterlot High operates like a "standard" high school: being a school that covers three or four years (9th-12th or 10th-12th grades. My high school was a three year school). But what if it doesn't?
What if it's actually a combined school? One which combines both middle and high school into one building, covering, say, 7th-12th grades?
Suddenly there's a lot of confusing things that make sense. Want to make the case that the three pictures of Sunset in the first movie are all from the Fall Formal? Well, since the Fall Formal seems to be open to the whole student body, Sunset could easily have won the first time in 7th grade, then again in 8th, and finally in 9th (the Freshman grade), leaving the girls still in 10th grade (Sophomore) at the time of the first movie.
This also gives Sunset time to build her reputation, and more time for her to have been in the human world and hence, why Twilight never encountered her when she was Celestia's personal student. It also explains why the human versions of the CMC, Diamond Tiara, and Silver Spoon are there, despite seeming a lot younger the other students. They're in 7th or 8th grade.
Admittedly, yes, the e vents of the movies, specials, and shorts are all still getting smushed into the last couple of years, but that's not completely insurmountable.
Will this affect my timeline? Maybe. I need to think it over, but from a big picture standpoint, CHS being a combined school does fix quite a few problems everybody's been having with the order of events.
That thought had occurred to me. I know my most of my cousins went to schools like that. Also, you forgot Snips and Snails. However, we have yet to see any other fillies or colts as humans.
Yeah I've always assumed the school covers grades 7-12 as that would make the most sense.
I somehow hadn’t heard this idea before a few days ago, but when I did it explains a ton.
I like your theory. For the record, if I was a serious fan of the Simpsons or Big Bob's Burgers, I'd be really annoyed that their characters never age either.
Well there is one problem. That first picture can't be the pony Sunset because later on in the shorts we learned that Sunset couldn't really act until later after ruining Rarity at the spring fling. And what was the first thing Sunset did coming out of the portal into the human world? She yelled at the closest person and then cursed Princess Celestia when she found out that there is no magic and the portal is closed.
That first picture has to be the human Sunset.

Um, where are you getting all that from? There's nothing in any official media about human Sunset, nor what Sunset did when she first came through. Also all Rarity said was she expected "some sort of apology for last spring's debacle." It doesn't preclude Sunset still keeping everyone in the grip of terror, nor from winning other Fall Formal crowns.

It's a small picture in the comic titled The Fall of Sunset Shimmer
