    Remember Obscure Spike Shippings?

Remember when obscure Spike shippings that were met with middling reviews and a lot of confused interest popped out of this account like every few months?

    Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Remember Spike stories that felt like they could have an entire pop-punk album written based on them?

"Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord" - Summer 2k18 Competition · 11:55pm Aug 1st, 2018

It's time, my friends.

After the massive success of my last contest, I knew I wanted to come back for round two before the year was over. Now that Bronycon is over and summer is starting to wind down, what better time to start?!

That being said, I wanted to do something that was as equally challenging as the last one but just as open to interpretation. A theme that would stretch the creative minds of the participants and give the site a wealth of fun stories to read. A prompt that was simple, yet complex. A competition that would let everyone have a good time.

Well, ladies and gentleman, I do believe I found just what we're looking for.

DEAR LOVE: A BEAUTIFUL DISCORD

The idea of star-crossed lovers is one that's been done to pieces in every form of media imaginable but rarely is it executed well. Two characters that don't seem to have a chance of being together are given the opportunity through random circumstance and sunshine and rainbows and all that nonsense. Let's shake it up a bit, shall we?

I've read many stories that feature Heroes and Villains. I've read quite a few that feature heroes and villains falling in love, usually before or after the said villain is evil. I've seen a few where the heroes and villains are together in the midst of their fighting, but usually in an alternate universe setting of some kind. So, given that fact, we're going to toss all of that out the window and narrow this down.

PROMPT

Ship any of the princesses with any of the villains in the show. However, the villain cannot be reformed in your story's time and setting, and you cannot make use of the AU tag.

That's right. I want to see some Princess/Villain shipping that follows the show's canon and where the villain is actually evil at the time of the romance happening. Pretty simple, right? Yes, no, maybe? Here are a couple examples of what you can write about and what you can't.

Acceptable: Tirek escapes his imprisonment and returns to destroy Equestria. Upon doing so, he runs into Cadance and romance stuff happens.

Unacceptable: Cadance was never married and is actually a bounty hunter on the hunt for Tirek, whom she ends up falling in love with.

Those aren't perfect, I get it, but you get the picture.

Here are the rules:

RULES

All entries must be between 2k and 15k words long.

There will be no M rated stories allowed.

One entry per author.

The villains and princesses must be within the series' canon, so no OC's.

All entries must be new. As in they must have been posted to the site on August 1st or later.

Now, I know that this is going to be challenging. So, just like last time, I have a hefty amount of prizes involved. Let's take a look behind curtain number one, shall we!

1st Place
$150 via Paypal

2nd Place
$50 via Paypal

3rd Place
$15 via Paypal

Note: I'm also working on altering these prizes to include some art commissions, but this will be the stable reward range of which you can expect.

There you have it! In addition to those lovely prizes, every entry will get a review from one of the judges and the top three will be blogged and advertised by the judging staff, of course.

Speaking of which, including myself, here are the judges for the contest this time around: Curify, Tidal, Roselucky Seven, and Carapace.

We all know our way around a romance story, but we each have a different viewpoint and bring different skill sets to the table. I feel this will bring a wide variety of outlooks and opinions to the judging table.

Alright, now let's talk about the deadline. This competition will run until my birthday this year, October 6th. So, once the calendar officially changes to October 7th, it'll be too late. Let me put it in bold:

THE DEADLINE IS 10/6/2018

Well, now that all that's out of the way, there's only one thing left to say:

Have fun and write away! I'll be posting blogs and creating an official group for the contest post-haste, so keep tuned in for any updates.

Peace!

-Famous

Note: To avoid confusion about what qualifies as a villain or princess, here is a rule of thumb: if a character was ever an antagonist, they're a villain. (Discord, Trixie, Gilda...) and if they're a canon princess, they're a princess (Twilight, Cadance, Skystar...).

Two amazing shipping contess happening? Oh my. Though I have to ask what timezone you'll be going by for October 7th (better safe than sorry.)

Is there no length restriction?

4912299
Crap! I knew I was forgetting one part. Hold on.

Between 2-15k words.

4912300
Fug. I assume we can't submit stories already written?

EDIT: THERE ARE RULES NOW.

i, uh... I forgot to put them in the first time.

Mmmmm CRYSTALSSSSSSS

Hmm...
:rainbowhuh:
I miiiight try this actually, h m m.

Here's my question though, do movie characters count?

I actually really like that AU bounty hunter prompt

4912310
Well, the movie is part of the series' canon, so totally!

4912306
Damn. I've already written a story where Celestia and Discord fall in love, but it's too long.
>:C

4912311
Bruh, be a good example and give AU the middle finger for the sake of this competition, please. GAWD.

4912313
DisLestia is a fantastic ship.

I'm actually going to enter this time, honest!

4912318
I upvoted your comment so you better enter, boi.

4912312
Then I have my idea! :yay: Consider me in on this, hehehe

Can it be Beanis? The other contest advertised today had some very strict rules about the inclusion of beanis and I just want to be certain of the viability of beanis in this contest.

4912311
am sure that one of you guys could whip that story up easy peasy. it's okay 2k-15k. that's enough for an average rom-com.

4912322
I promise that I might possibly consider maybe thinking about whether or not I perhaps want to wonder about whether or not there's a chance I'll enter. Honest.

and you cannot make use of the AU tag

I sincerely suggest you kill this from the rules to get a broader variety of stories.

4912341
I definitely appreciate the suggestion. Thanks for reading the blog! The reason it's a rule is at the end of the day I really don't have a whole lot of interest in reading AU stories. That and the fact it prevents meddling with the canon personalities too much, which is ultimately what I'm wanting to read about. But like I said, I really appreciate you making a suggestion to help out.

Can I use Spike, perhaps specifically within the context of the episode 'Princess Spike' ?

And are we allowed to reform the villains by the end, it's a little unclear :facehoof:

Shit, does this mean I have to act like I know what I'm doing?

I am tempted...

I honest-to-oranges can’t imagine how I’d execute this premise without failing miserably. I’m on the fence about this one.

4912455
I'd love to see your style applied here. it'd be exciting to read!

4912436

Nah, I'll just lose humiliatingly, just like in Categorical's contest where I didn't even get a mention despite putting up some of the best work I've ever done.

Quick question regarding which villains are game, just because I stumbled across some:

  • Nightmare Rarity? (because comic)
  • Mane-iac? (because also comic, but different)

... lest my brain runs off into an undesirable direction :twilightblush:

4912594
I personally believe the comics are fair game because they tie into the show so well, so go for it! Also, heck yeah Mane-Iac!

Way to think outside the box!

...might want to change the deadline, or supply us with time machines.

Edit: Forget it! I read it day/month/year. I get it now.

you cannot make use of the AU tag.

This restriction is really limiting the number of ideas I want to write. To the point where I don't think I'm going to be entering this contest after all.

Good luck to the contestants!

4912729
I'm sorry to hear that. Thanks for comsidering, however!

In the span of maybe fifteen minutes, before I've even finished my coffee, I've already thought of two ideas that I expect many others will think of too. I've also continued pondering, and come up with at least four more ideas. All which work within the confines of the rules.

All without touching the comics, which are apparently allowed.

Doesn't seem like a very restrictive contest to me.

I'll see if I can figure somethin' out.

4912847
Thanks for taking the time to read the post! If you enter, I'd love to see your take on the subject.

4912887
Ooh, with your worldbuilding skills, I can't even imagine what you could come up with.

I'll try to come up with something.

I'm looking over this blog for maybe the 4th time and I still don't know what I'd write

Could do past Dislestia but honestly that seems like it would be cheating as it gives a lot more room to maneuver 🤔

also just realized I'm not following woOPS

4912960
If you find a way to maneuver, it's not cheating, it's creative thinking. Past Dislestia would be cool, or maybe a future story where Discord returns to his ways and Cadance falls for him when her husband passes. There's so much one can do.

Ok, so, I'm going to enter this, because I just got a really good idea (better than the one from the last contest you ran). However, it's a comedy, and I'm worried that with Majin bringing the beans it won't measure up.

4913018
Remember, man cannot live on beans alone.

4913020
:rainbowhuh:

:rainbowlaugh:

Ok, reassurance accepted.

4912887
It's almost like you had a Sombra story I remember you mentioning.

Hmm.

... are multiple entries allowed? :')

4913175
One entry per. Sorry. :twilightblush: I should probably add that to the rules, though. Thanks so much for asking.

4913177
Curses! :fluttershysad: But also quite understandable.
