If you don't want to read a summary of the story this fic is based on (the tumblr Ask King Sombra), don't read on beyond the spoiler. I don't reveal any details about Pink Alicorn Blues there, but if you want to read the backstory on your own and be surprised, it's best not to read on further.
Thanks to Cloudy Arrow for asking for the AKS story summary. It made me realize this back story blog was needed.
Ask King Sombra begins after he has exploded over the Crystal Empire, in other words, it picks up where the Crystal Empire episodes left off. Coffee Talk is a reporter from Equestria who came to the Crystal Empire, but got caught up in Sombra's Magic and she basically blew up with him.
The tumbler story is Sombra's struggle after being resurrected (along with Coffee Talk) to either become a better pony or give into the uber demon he had welcomed in to his head that led him to kill the old Crystal Princess and seize the Crystal Empire's throne.
While traveling with Coffee Talk, Sombra took the fake name of "Kingsley" so no pony would realize who he was. After some adventures in the Frozen North, they ran across some of his old comrades when he was Captain of the Guard and their mistrust of him made him conclude what he had been doubting his entire journey - that he couldn't turn around and be a good pony.
So he gives it into the uber demon and tries to take over to the Empire again, but when he gets to the crystal heart, he finds Cadence, Shining Armor, Celestia and Luna there to arrest him. Luna is profoundly disappointed in him because she had faith that he could defeat the demon and become good.
In the meantime, Princess Cadence has severe doubts that her subjects love her and after Kingsley vanishes the uber demon from his head, it discovers her and strikes a deal with her that with its help she can make her subjects love her. This of course backfires horribly and she takes control of their minds and turns them against Shining Armor, Kingsley and Coffee Talk.
In order to free Cadence and destroy the demon for good, Kingsley strikes a deal with it to let Cadence go and control him again because he knows the demon really feeds on the fear and hatred it enjoyed while controlling Kingsley. While it is in his head, Coffee Talk throws the Crystal Heart above their heads and the newly released crystal ponies energize it and kill Kingsley and the uber demon, banishing it this time for good.
Devastated by her friend's death, Coffee Talk gathers his cracked and broken horn and leaves, going back to Equestria. Three months later, Kingsley is suddenly resurrected and the two of them retire to a city in the Frozen North called Yakut.
I take the story up 3 months later.
Hopes this helps anyone who wants to know more, but please, when you have a long afternoon of free time, go check out Ask King Sombra on Tumblr for yourself. I came in towards the end of the story and spent three hours myself catching up (I lingered to appreciate the artwork) and it was TOTALLY worth it.

Just finished reading the Story of Ask King Sombra. and while the summary is good it only really summarizes the last arc of the story and its end i feel maybe it should include a summarization of the crystal wolf caves and the elk village arcs since those are major.
