In my story-canon, there’s the Three Pony Tribes of Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns, not to mention the Alicorns
We’ve seen other types of ponies but don’t know all that much about them aside from what we see in the show and the comics aren’t always reliable. So I’m gonna discuss how this factors into my own work:
The Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns are what I call Natural Ponies, and I suppose Alicorns (to some extent) fit into that category, but I also have what I call Pony Variants, which include (but are not limited to):
Lunar Ponies - Crystal Ponies - Party Ponies - Sea Ponies - Solar Ponies
The reason I call them “Variants” is because they all originated from the Natural Ponies; if you are curious and want to hear more of how I portray these ponies in my work, please feel free to PM me
I like the idea of classifying them as variants, rather than a whole other species. Though I have to question, why the sea ponies? The way I see it, the origonal sea ponies were a myth, then the Hippogryphs used magic to transform themselves into the Sea ponies and create their version of atlantis.
I'vs just realized the other half of the strangeness with this, the Hippogryphs really Would be another species, a crossbreed of the gryphons and ponies (not sure on the canonicity of the hippogryph origin, so can't say for sure in that regard), so at least a hybrid, but still, that raises the question of if we should count them as ponies still?
Sorry if it's off of your own story's canon, I'm not caught up and don't know how close your sticking to the canon lore past where I'm at. Still though, Love the idea!
