They went there.
They actually did something I should've seen coming, but never would've expected. Even at this point, on season friggin EIGHT, I wouldn't have expected this to happen. But they did
Ladies and Gentlemen, Spike the Dragon has his mother fucking wings.
And considering how many stories I've written about the cute little drake in his previous form, I feel like I'm basically obligated to share my opinions on the matter. I think it's fairly clear that judging by the stories I've written of him, I had quite the... preference at seeing him at his current pudgy adorable self. And while I had a feeling he'd eventually grow wings or something, I kinda figured they'd ignore that after 7 seasons of keeping him as he is. But much like the CMC getting their Cutie Marks, Shining and Cadance having a baby, Big Macintosh becoming a dirty hetero getting a Special Somepony, and even Twilight becoming an Alicorn, MLP has always been about changes big and small.
And I gotta say, I don't dislike this change in any way, shape, or form.
Spike is still Spike. In fact, it seems like the only major change they gave to him is a new set of wings! He's still the way he was before, but with a new accessory that makes him much more helpful and awesome IMO. This will undoubtedly give him a lot of new story ideas, and make him a more useful character in the series overall. Honestly, the fact that his appearance hasn't been affected is the biggest relief I could've had.
I'm really happy that even after eight seasons, MLP is willing to keep surprising me with new changes and ideas to keep the series fresh. And believe me, I am very much looking forward to seeing what I can write involving this change. I've already had a few ideas regarding Spike and the School of Magic (perhaps him teaching a class himself?), and him being a flying dragon hasn't affected those ideas in any way. In fact... I bet those wings could be rather useful for a few new prompts later on. :D
But yeah. As one of the big Spike writers on the site, I figured I should give my opinion on the matter. The episode was great, Spike was great, and his new wings are great. Awesome episode, and no fanboy raging from me. ;)
Now all they have to do is give Shining some legit character this season.
This is one of my favorite Spike episodes since the Gauntlet of Fire!

I have to agree with you there! Although the lack of Ember in this episode made me consider this the 2nd best Spike episode. But still, I'm really satisfied with how it turned out.

We can chalk her absence up to her being busy in the Dragon Lands, but Smolder was a nice way of getting more info on dragons without having to completely rely on Zecora. Plus it makes sense that this new info is being distributed since it's established that not many knew that much about dragons in the first place.

I was actually considering that. Like, maybe giving some helpful pointers to adult mares with the aid of toys and stuff. Purely educational with a dash of fun humor.
This would have been a nice surprise to me as well if not to a YouTube thumbnail a week ago showing him new additions but still I love the future ideas that can come from this, I just hope they don't squander it

No, Chronicles of a Sluttified Spike will not be affected by this change. Technically speaking, that story was set after the Dragon Quest episode, and is still during season 2. Also, I was planning to conclude that story in a couple chapters anyway.
