S8E5 Grannies Gone Wild Review · 9:42pm Apr 14th, 2018
First, fuck that title. Seriously.
So this was a lame episode. The Wonderbolts tell Rainbow Dash about an awesome rollercoaster in Las Pegasus that they all love and is closing soon. First, could have done without the "a true Wonderbolt" angle here, couldn't this just be something Dash wants to do because she wants it? Applejack is a total ass in this episode, she completely tricks Rainbow into agreeing to champerone the old girls, and then tells her to be a wet blanket and not let them have any fun on pain of having to bring them home early before getting to ride the coaster. Rainbow even points out she'll have no time to ride the coaster watching the group and AJ reassures her she'll "find the time". Applejack was totally trolling Rainbow and is probably at home laughing her flank off this entire episode.
Of course, the old ponies are not fragile little flowers and can have fun in their own ways, and Rainbow keeps stopping their fun tormented by a ghostly giant Applejack head. I do love the joke at the end "Do I really need to say anything?" but the lead-up got very boring and frustrating. When Rainbow leaves the line to go back to the room is a shining moment of maturity and responsibility for her (ironically, that's usually AJ's thing). After that we're just watching the same joke over and over until the resolution. I presumed it would be some "well Rainbow can still have fun with them because they're fun after all" but actually the girls are casino members who have perks, like skipping lines, that they use to get Rainbow on the ride. And I like that too.
Overall episode is very meh, predictable and boring and annoying at how this plot shouldn't have happened three times over (Rainbow shouldn't have had to accompany the girls, shouldn't have had AJ brainwashing her to watch them like a hawk, should have mentioned she had something she wasn't to do).
Individual highlights:
Rainbow had a lot of good faces in the intro.
Gordon Ramsey pony and Cranky.
Granny's bun down.
Trixie's dad that is so obviously Trixie's dad they have to troll us with how obvious they intended it to be Trixie's dad.
Rick and Morty.
Walter White. wut.
"I thought you were the fun one."
"Sugar booger."
Also, the Appledash is so thick, it looks like Rarijack. :V
This is about as thin as GM Berrow's episodes tend to be (and I'm really sorry we didn't get to see the Flim-Flam Brothers in the flesh), but it was a good bit more entertaining than I'd anticipated. And I've decided Goldie Delicious is one of my favorite ponies. :D
But seriously, worst title ever.
Yeah, I've got almost nothing more to add to this. I first question how Rainbow Dash never learns of this ride until the last minute, WHEN THERE WAS LITERALLY A PICTURE NEAR HER LOCKER!!!
Otherwise, the entire episode's fault lies entirely on Applejack for telling Rainbow Dash those stupid rules, and keeping the grannies out of the blank too. It looks like there's absolutely nothing wrong with them, but because of what Applejack said, anything could go wrong with them. Rainbow it outright lied to believe these grannies can't handle fun.
Short and simple, this entire episode is completely Applejack's fault.
At the very least, I'm really glad this didn't turn out to be an episode where the Rollercoaster turned out to not be worth riding in the end.
