Brief Thought on School Daze · 10:52pm Mar 27th, 2018
For a what it is, the premiere is decent. The conflict about the whole "by the book" thing and the students' friendship were interesting. New characters range from just okay to adorable (Ocellus is my favorite of the Student Six; speaking of whom, I find it hilarious that her name's very close to what I named one of my valley girl Changelings (named that one Ocelli, though)), though I guess I can't just gloss over that the voice of The Brain is in the episode. No, I'm not going to make a joke about him and Pinkie, that's been done a million times already.
However, what taints this episode for me is knowing that the Mane Six already have jobs, and yet Twilight expects her friends to teach on top of those? Unless the school is a weekend thing (and even then I still have my doubts on that), throwing this on top of a businessmare with three shops in three different cities, a Wonderbolt, the runner of an animal sanctuary, a farmer, and a baker/party planner... it just stretches my suspension of disbelief too far for me to buy that they could do all that without running themselves into the ground.
Wasn't there a lesson on working too hard earlier in the series? Or biting off more than you can chew? And yet, the premiere just glosses over the issue of juggling all of those responsibilities it like it's nothing. Unless they have a good answer, this issue is going to be a pet peeve for me throughout the season.
But, regardless, the episode's not terrible, and I'm not going to drop the show because of the school. There are episodes that I'm looking forward to based on their descriptions, and I have a Cheese Sandwich cameo to look out for, you know!
Apparently the school idea is corporate mandate from Hasbro, and the folks at DHX have to scramble to accommodate their true masters. Jim Miller, when asked to explain the logistics of the situation, answered with "cartoon logic."
Naturally, I'm assuming some combination of time magic and the Mirror Pool, because that's vastly more amusing.
