Catching Up: To Change a Changeling · 7:49am Mar 27th, 2018
all right everypony it's time for another rollicking pony adventure, or at least a rollicking changeling adventure idk. Thorax turned into a huge bear last time I saw him so I guess changelings aren't strictly limited to ponylike forms. Did we know that before? I don't really remember.
Anyway changelings! Obviously this episode is going to involve changelings somehow. Once I was thinking I wanted to write a story about that one changeling from the Canterlot Wedding episodes, who got more attention than the others for some reason I don't remember anymore. He ended up being called Doomie but we called him Razzle Dazzle at the time, or maybe the other way around for all I know lol. But the point is I was going to have him run into Trixie and her sister Moondancer, and they'd both try and take care of him and teach him to be a pony, and by watching him imitate them they'd learn how they were acting around each other and would end up becoming better sisters, very heartwarming, hugs all around.
"YOU, okay?! I learned it from watching YOU!!!" -every changeling ever, probably?
so yeah that's why you read these blogs, right? long-since-abandoned story ideas that you can steal? yeah don't worry boyyy I've got a million of them, or at least, I dunno, half a dozen probably. That's probably all on the changeling front though? Well except that one EQG young-adult novel I still think about writing one of these days, that's got a changeling in it, but I'm not giving the game away there juuuuuust in case
(now I watch as you go to your exciting pony blogs and type out this RED HOT SCOOP: local forgotten author has UNSPECIFIED IDEA that includes ONE CHANGELING!!! good lord almighty the views you'll get. the views.)
But changing! This episode is also about changing apparently. So is this going to be a villain redemption episode? Maybe track down Queen Chrysalis, because she's the only other changeling I can think of besides Thorax and we just had an episode starring the poor dude? (Well, I just had one--y'all had it months and months ago I guess.) Man what is it with friendship and redemption.
Okay but I had an amusing thought about redemption the other day, and btw this thought contains spoilers for whatever special that Wallflower Blush girl was from okay, so don't read it if you are not up to date on the EQGs: Wasn't it kind of ridiculous how fast Wallflower started apologizing and ruing her actions once her evil magic thingy was ruined? So here is what I am thinking, she was never evil at all, it was just a scheme. A, uh... non-evil scheme, I guess. Like from the start her goal was to make friends with Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy and all the rest, and she's learned by example and realized the BEST WAY to make friends is to attack them with evil magic, get hit by a rainbow powerup, then apologize. Like there's literally no other way to go about this, that's what you have to do to make friends when you're an equestria girl! Gosh and imagine what it must be like if you want to join a club, like do you have to attack every existing member of the club in order to get in? How are the rules written for this? Do you have to attack the members as a group or can you take them down individually over the course of a few days? I'd think it's be hard to have a functioning school if half the student body was being locked in evil magic cells by the other half, but that's why they don't pay me the big bucks.
So, uh, I think at some point here I was planning on watching a pony episode and had made clear I didn't know what it was going to be about, maybe I should start doing that.
okay
wait I wasn't paying attention to things ponies who weren't trixie were saying, what's this about a dread walmart???
gad I wish I was that good at rolling my R's
oh is that what thorax's problem was in the other episode? renegade changelings? I guess I wasn't listening to him at all either
so okay bear with me here for a sec, is this a working analogy thing? Twilight Sparkle : Starlight Glimmer :: Starlight Glimmer : Trixie Lulamoon. Like yeah it's incredibly adorable how they can communicate with each other nonverbally now, but idk it's a little weird how Starlight loses some of her edge when she's being the straight mare to Trixie's shenanigans. Like remember how Starlight was excited when she met Ember, would this Starlight palling around with Trixie and trying to set a good example have said that? Maybe not? But on the other hand maybe that's the point, like Starlight is actively trying to set a good example and idk, there are probably too many earlier episodes about their relationship that I don't remember well enough anymore to write a detailed analys--
wait, what am I even doing trying to write a detailed analysis anyway, this is no place for that. Let's just all collectively pretend the whole previous paragraph was just about how cute these girls are when they talk to each other, like this relationship feels more genuine than the main cast have had in most episodes in years
it's really weird to have so many different changelings capable of speech, even years in the past when they were still black and evil and stuff
You know, that Gift of the Maud Pie episode would have been a lot more interesting if one of the gifts had been an evil monster. It's good to see MLP going back and fixing its past mistakes!
ohhhh, mole rat, not walmart
Okay just keeping it real here, this whole third act was just pretty dumb, not to mention Rudolphy. Like they didn't quite come out and say they were only accepting Pharynx into their society because he was better at fighting than the rest of them, but it sure had that vibe. And the fight was unimpressive. But good for Thorax for sticking up for himself and blaming Starlight for everything, that was the right move.
Ehhhh I don't know how I feel about this episode. I guess Larynx is supposed to be the changeling version of Luna? Funky. But I think I spent most of the time not knowing how to react, and sometimes not even sure how I was supposed to. Like is nu!changeling society being presented as a bad thing? Is the overemphasis on feelings being made fun of here? What does My Little Pony stand to gain from this stance? Very confusing. And I couldn't take Starlight's speech seriously at all but maybe that was the point? I just don't know anymore.
Holy crap your theory about Wallflower is amazing.
