Catching Up · 6:28am Mar 21st, 2018
I've been sort of vaguely aware of stuff going on--there's a new season coming up I think, or maybe it already started? Some rumors of a new generation that are believed to be credible? Whew. I binged on a whole bunch of Equestria Girls stuff the other week, so now I guess it's time to catch up on the main series. From what I can tell I left off in early August after "The Perfect Pear," so up next is something called "Fame and Misfortune." Guess it's pony-watching time.
(Oh, well, "left off in early August" is excluding the movie, which I did see. But I was already behind on episodes by then.)
Thirty seconds in and I am already freaking out about these Toola Roola and Coconut Cream cameos. You don't even know! Toola Roola was one of the main characters in G3.5, and she's been completely absent all this time. Good gosh! She's got good colors and I even named my pony-rendering tool after her. And Coconut Cream was one of the first pony toys I ever owned, because she was part of the Toys R Us (RIP) pack that was the first time blind-bag-sized ponies were sold anywhere in the US. This is quite the one-two punch. Plus they've both got multicolored hair and that is totally my jammmmmmm
Starlight Glimmer, master of collating
it's not too late for starlight to fix everything by going back in time
come to think of it, that statement may be true of every episode
Well that has got to be just about the weirdest episode to come back on. o_O Super glad I wasn't hardcore plugged into pony forums and other online discourse at the time that hit the air, I imagine they must have been quite the sight to see. But with time passed, I'm glad we can all agree that hyperfocusing on small details about pony cartoons is bad and...
wait. shit.
I will boycott anypony who boycotts Rarity, that is my very practical and serious takeaway here.

I've been behind since Tirek, and this is basically the only thing I know about Starlight Glimmer

You're doing good work here
I guess this "Triple Threat" episode kind of sums up the problem with the previous one: we've all read this Archie issue before. I mean maybe we haven't? Veronica probably doesn't breathe fire and eat rocks except in very special miniseries? But when you know how the episode is going to end before you're a minute in, you sort of have to focus on the journey and the characters instead don't you? So your takeaway doesn't end up being "talking to friends solves problems"--even though that probably just summed up half of everything I write--but instead it comes down to what you think of the characters involved, and history has established that i don't care about Spike?
like
I just don't
and Thorax was not at his best here either. But Ember! Ember was in top form. Thank you for making fun of the purple shiny ponies Ember. We can all say a little prayer of thankfulness that Sunset Shimmer isn't purple too. Or Dewdrop Dazzle! Or... okay I do have to look this one up to make sure I'm remembering her name right... Starbeam Twinkle.
Yeah! She's pink, not purple. Completely different!
okay I guess I have time for one more episode tonight before I completely lose consciousness. "Campfire Tales!" Maybe this is going to be a lorey worldbuilding HISTORY OF EQUESTRIA sort of episode if they're telling tales? I always have mixed feelings about those because on the one hand they're cool! sometimes, but on the other hand they tend to contradict my ideas (like oh god what if the windigoes come back someday and I have to throw out all sorts of plotbunnies) and there's always a certain pressure when writing to match up every minor fact established in every possible episode and
HA what am I even talking about, I haven't written anything in a million years, what do I care about the minutiae of canon.
alsoooooo
yeah I dunno, maybe the above is kind of a silly concern anyway? Like have I ever written anything where Twilight had wings? My natural instinct is still kind of in the gap between season 1 and season 2, so maybe it doesn't matter so much what happens in later episodes. Except that doesn't 100% make sense, because it's not that these things are happening after season 1, they're happening before season 1--a thousand years ago probably--but being shown later, and does that make a difference? I'm not sure, maybe it depends?
okay after all this I bet Campfire Tales is going to have nothing at all to do with equestrian lore is it
(no but it's a question of characterization isn't it? like take the crystal prep girls from the Friendship Games. Were they called the Shadowbolts? Let's assume they were. If I wanted to write a story where they were so INCENSED about their loss that they sold their souls to Adagio Dazzle and became sirens and conquered Australia, that'd be fine
(unless you live in australia, um, sorry)
it'd be fine, even though there was that one later EQG short set in a mall or something where the shadowbolts showed up again and were kind of friendly and didn't appear to be world leaders. So that's a contradiction of fact yes but I could call it an Alternate Universe and nobody would complain. But if that same EQG short established things about their characters, like, literally anything at all about the cyborg girl, Sunny something? and I contradicted that while having her conquer Australia? like I feel THAT would be a real storytelling problem. There's a difference between what HAPPENS to people and who they ARE, isn't there?? I think there is?)
"I love that story" about a pony growing abruptly larger, mourns young applebucking filly who has been stuck at the same stage in her growth for the last seven years because she is a cartoon character
but it could be worse, she could be old! and therefore ugly
yes that's enough for tonight. Hooray for ponies! wooo quadrupeds! shadow puppets and vikings and so on!
For the record, Season 8 does start this coming Staurday.
Oh man, those comments were a good time.
