Review of Rainbow's Song, written by DMDash71 · 4:49am Mar 12th, 2018

Here's my review of Rainbow's Song, byt DMDash71.

While I enjoyed the story and was interested enough to make it to the end to see how it all ended, it wasn't as enjoyable as other stories. That has pretty much all to do with my personal taste rather than with the story itself.

However, if you like your fanfics like you like your MLP episodes (specially the early ones), the this is definitely a story you'll love. If on top of that you love Rainbow Dash and/or Scootaloo, then this is definitely a must read. It isn't my case tho as Rainbow Dash is perhaps the least interesting character of the mane 6 for me.

The plot is pretty much an excuse plot just to tell the story, and the author kind of admits it in the story's description. That's ok, as it's really how the first episodes worked.

One of the problems for me is Rainbow Dash saying all the time how awesome she is. One would think that if you were really that awesome, people would notice it and wouldn't need you to remind them every 5 minutes. But again, this is what the character is like in the show, so I can't complain about this. If anything, this means it keeps the story and the original source coherent.

Pinkie Pie and Applejack shone very well, specially Applejack. Fluttershy felt a bit more insecure than usual, which again, reminds me of the first episodes. Twilight and Rarity were just Twilight and Rarity, nothing to say about them really.

The character that really impressed me in this story was Scootaloo. It was a much deeper take on it than usual, while still very sweet and innocent. It does feel like the true emotions of a child that's longing for acceptance. Best character development ever! (well, not exactly, but you get my point).

One thing the story did very well was that it made me feel truly excited about the singing event in the chapter previous to it. All the nervousness and excitement of the mane 6 about their performances were well transmitted. For an excuse plot and a relatively unimportant event (it's just them singing, not saving the world), this was a great achievement.

Unfortunately, and I hate to say it, the performance was a disappointment for me. We are just told how 5 of the mane 6 perform. I was looking forward to "watching" them and I didn't get that. Although I guess it's my own fault because it's a story about Rainbow Dash, and it's called "Rainbow Dash's Song" for crying out loud. I still expected to see the performances and I was sorry that they weren't there.

Rainbow's song didn't make it for me. I had to go back and re-read it 2 times because I wasn't engaged enough and it felt like a chore. It didn't feel like her. I get that it's the point, but I kinda expected something like the tone of her part in "at the Gala." In fact, I enjoyed Rainbow's descriptions of her flying and her life much more than the song. I specially loved the one where she describes how she flies in the dark in the middle of the night, only with the stars. I've done the human equivalent myself, parking on the side of the road while traveling and turning off the lights of the car off just to see the darkness and the starts in the sky.

While many parts of the story are just not the thing I like, I can't deny it's a great story for its type. The writing is good although I was surprised to see two obvious typos (you arenervous). The descriptions and the action were engaging. The characters in the story are the exact same characters you love from the show. Scootaloo's part is superb. And if you are looking for a "a TV episode but in fanfic" story, then this is definitely for you. And obviously, if you love Rainbow Dash, (and I know many of you do), then it's criminal to miss this story.
