A Significantly Belated New Year's Resolution Announcement (To Myself) · 3:26am Jan 16th, 2018
2017 was an interesting year for me. On the one hand my personal and professional life went fairly well. I got myself on track for training as a teacher, pizza delivery stayed mostly profitable with my new(er) car performing well, and I've learned much on many topics. And played some damn good games as well, of course. On the other hand, I didn't accomplish very much of anything at all in the writing field. Yes, I posted a few stories for contests and even returned (very belatedly) to Embracing Chaos, but there was so much more I could have done.
In light of that, this year I'm making a promise to myself: Increase my writing output and STOP BEING SO DAMN LAZY. Yes, I had some damn good games to play this year, but that shouldn't have stopped me from committing to my other hobby so massively. I think I posted only about 4 chapters of my primary story (Humanity's Stand over on Fanfiction) in 2017, which is abysmal. Progress is so horribly stalled on that story that I was almost hesitant to go ahead with the chapter I had planned. I just felt like it wasn't enough to fix the long silence.
And that's another thing that I need to fix: becoming effectively unreachable for long stretches of time and remaining completely silent on my progress on, well, anything I've been doing. Thus, I will be enacting two resolutions for 2018 to try and improve on these issues.
Resolution number 1 is, as I said, increase writing output. This won't be just for my primary stories, this will be for anything and everything I have a neat idea for. A number of short stories, maybe some one shots, perhaps a few slow burn long runners. All will be on the menu. And to make sure I am following through on this, I will now be putting up a quota of sorts for myself for each month. It'll be a loose quota, but it basically it goes something like this: At least one chapter of my Bridgeverse story each month, at least one chapter of another of my long-runners, at least one short story or (lacking an interesting idea to follow) a sequel or such for one of my prior short stories. Ambitious? Maybe, but I need some damn ambition to drive me after being bloody listless for a whole year.
Also in the cards is a potential series of 'stories' I might be working on with a friend of mine called MLP Episodes Revised. As it probably sounds, it would be taking a look at episodes of the show, looking at what they tried to achieve and well they did it (usually poorly in the episodes we would be picking to revise) and then coming up with ways to retell the episode to fit the goal better while still feeling like what the show would actually do. It will probably be a tricky subject to cover, since not all episodes have the same problems to the same people, but I feel like it would be a nice exercise in critical thinking and analysis of what the show does and how it could have been done better. We might even be tackling other projects from the larger canon latter if things go well, but no promises there.
Finally, I will be instituting upon myself a requirement of posting at least one blog post every two weeks either here on my profile (for when I'm working on stuff for Fimfiction) or on the Bridge group (for HS and other Bridge content). This is both to keep myself focused on actually writing stuff and to keep my readers (what few there are) informed on what I'm up to. I also feel it would be good to do some real communication with folks regardless. Can't make new friends if you don't go looking for them after all.
Thanks for listening everyone, and I hope you have an excellent 2018. Happy (Belated) New Year.
herpi nu yer!
Boldly stated! We'll see about helping you stick to those resolutions. I do want to see Embracing Chaos continued. ^_^
