Princess Celestia's alleged divinity. · 9:44pm Oct 18th, 2012
Princess Celestia, Co-ruler of Equestria. Dominion of the Sun and the sky and possibly a few other things. Commands the very course sun itself (and until Luna got back, the moon too) Her power is unquestioned. Ethereal, eternal, powerful yet kind with nigh infinite patience and love for her subjects.
Not a Goddess.
Not even a little one.
It's true, nowhere in the show is she even referred to as a Goddess. Nopony prays to her, no temples are built in her honor. Narrator refers to her simply as princess, or ruler. Same goes for almost everypony. (As in, nopony refers to her as anything but princess or ruler. Rather than everypony not being a godess... dang grammar)
"But!" I hear the neighsayers bray, "She can raise the sun! She's immortal! That's pretty divine, right?"
Ignoring the distressing lack of autonomous systems in the Equestrian celestial body orbital mechanics, yes, that is pretty impressive. But bear in mind. Pre-Equestrian Unicorns managed this feat, prior to Celestia's hitherto unexplained arrival to Equestria. As for her apparent immortality, this is a fairly standard trope with powerful magical beings.
Celestia is Royalty and the authority in what appears to be a magocraticly governed princeps. The existance of mayor mare indicates there's some democratic processes going on. I am not sure where I was going with this. The discussion was about Celestia's supposed divinity.
Also if her impish behaviour to all the fuss and pomp her little ponies make over her personage usually, I feel basing a religion around her would make her feel a little more than just awkward.
So either she is a Godess, but extremely humble about it. Or she is simply a extremely powerful unicorn. (Or Alicorn, to distinguish her from those poor wingless peasants)
Either way. I'd feel slightly less devastated if my immortal princess had her big alabaster butt handed to her by Chrysalis. Than if my immortal goddess got knocked off of her ivory pedestal by the same.
In fact: Going by our established definition of a goddess:
* Immense display of power.
* Apparent immortality.
We may as well establish Chrysalis as a goddess as well. A dark, insidious Goddess that steals stallions souls and makes them her slaves. With immense power and ability of shapeshifting, seduction and, given enough time. mind control. I'd not be surprised if she was several thousand years old.
I'd go into a deeper discussion and involve Discord in this as well, but eh, just my opinion. Bugs me every time I see somepony drop to her knees and go praise Celestia in a fic.
Back to my own fictions and slowly deteriorating mind~
I don't care if she's a goddess or not. In the end, Celestia is Celestia, and I like her for that. Likewise, Chrysalis is Chrysalis, Discord is Discord, and so on and so forth.
