Man Cannot Keep It Going Forever

There comes a time in a story's life when it's time to stop and say "The End", and I think for Man Cannot Live On Coffee Alone, I'm there.

Spoilers ahead, obviously, for Man Cannot Live On Coffee Alone. And before you think it: no, I'm not quitting or leaving, lol

    30,000 words later...

    I did it!

It's done. The Festival of Friendship Arc for Man Cannot Live On Coffee Alone is done! I'm so happy to have it finally complete. It was a massive undertaking in the best and worst sort of way. It took me a bit of work to shake the rust off, and Chapter 9c might get a touch-up, but for now, with Chapter 9d complete and feeling back to full form, I'm happy to say that it's done.

Yeah, I KNOW what I said!

Title says it all. Yes, I still don't know if I'm going to finish this beast. This arc gives me headaches for many reasons. But... well, when the inspiration strikes, sometimes you just gotta run with it.

Yeah, I know what I said.

The author's note in the chapter says it all, but hell with it.

Update and Cleaning Up my Userpage!

Hey Fimfic, long time no see. Hope you all are well!

Rarity pic, in keeping with tradition!

I'm doing quite good. I'm a full-time teacher these days, and that eats up a lot of my time. Between that, editing work, a healthy long-distance relationship, and D&D, I'm quite busy.

November Update! · 4:07pm Nov 14th, 2017

Hey, everybody. Hope you all are having a good start to your holiday season! I just have a short bit if update news for you all, just to give you a general idea of the state of things.

First of all, a shout out to my followers and readers for being so supportive. As always, you guys are awesome. I'm trying to think of cool ideas and ways to give back, and maybe I'll do a blog about that at some later point. I have a few cool ideas that I am kicking around in my head, so stay tuned.

On to the state of the story: I'm plugging along at a commission fic and, of course, Man Cannot Live On Coffee Alone. I have something of a conundrum approaching that story in the future, here, as I stray into Mature territory with some of the themes and ideas that are going to be discussed. I'm not quite sure if I should make a third story, or just split a side-fic for this one and add in the M-rated chapters to the side fic. I don't want to imply that these chapters are supposed to be separate, but I suppose I could carefully separate the stuff that REALLY deserves the M tag with the stuff that can handle the T tag. I guess I'm coming to you guys with the question, then: what is the plan? What do you think is the best way to go with that?

Regardless, I'm about 3000 words into the next chapter, and it is going to be a long one. I may need to split it in half, because otherwise it is going to be a monster chapter clocking in at well over 10,000 words.

As for my commissions, I am about to have a second slot open up, as I am nearly finished with a commission fic. PM me if you are interested, there is one slot currently open.

On more personal news, I'm working a lot these days. I typically have two 16-hour days in the span of a week, thanks to working at two jobs to help make ends meet. It's satisfying, being the bread winner, but tiring nonetheless. I'm trying to use my free time constructively, and it has been fun to be writing a lot.

So, that's all for this month. I guess I have one final question:

How many of you like Dungeons and Dragons?

I try to play DnD with some of my friends online once every few weeks, and I enjoy it pretty well.

As far as the rest of the blog, I'm sorry to hear you're having to bust your ass so much just to get by. I've been there and it's not very fun. Your writing is great, so we're all willing to wait a bit for it. It's definitely worth the wait, that's for sure.

You're a great dude man and we all know it. Keep rockin' and do what you do, alright?

Hello lad. Just want to say that you should take ye time doin' the things you like. I can wait patiently like a kid waits for a second marshmallow.

As to answer your question related to the story, I believe adding the M-rated chapters of the fic to the side would be better. Mostly because of a gut feeling. I can't really explain into detail why I would want this, but my gut feeling is suggesting that this would be a better idea.

Also lad, I know that work has gotten you exhausted for the stories. Honestly, as I've said before, take your time with the stories. I truly appreciate all the time, work, and detail you put into your stories lad. So take your time, we ain't dyin anytime soon.

Here, have a few pints of good ol' Guinness. On me. Cheers lad!

I've only played DnD for 3 hours, but it was really fun. Now I'm excited for a DnD story heh.

I agree that any mature chapters can be shunted off to their own side story. Treat them like deleted scenes.

Steel Resolve did it with Green to make Red: The Color of Passion. Adult content for those who want it; may be ignored by those who don't. Just the first example that springs to mind.

How are you playing D&D online? I'm interested.

I absolutely love D&D, I've been playing on-and-off (which means as much as I can) for close to a decade now. If you're planning a D&D fic I would love to read it.

As for the M-rated chapters I feel it depends on what kind of audience you believe this story is drawing and just what those chapters will contain. Very unhelpful I know, but you've already taken it to dark places and there have been commenters who have expressed a desire for the story to be even darker.

If you're referring to "adult" content, I've seen stories that have those chapters flagged in the titles and in author side-bars at the start of said chapters.

But I think the important thing to remember is that if you start a 'side story' that contains mature chapters you want your audience to read, it will make it hard for readers to follow. The ones who do want to read that content will need to flip between both stories and sort out which chapters came when. Not impossible, but difficult, especially if you need to re-upload a chapter and it screws around with the upload date.

The biggest loss of an audience comes when casual viewers/readers need to work hard to follow the story. Countless TV shows have been killed that way, often by changing when a show airs (see: Star Trek ToS). History dictates your diehard fans will follow, but your casual fans may get frustrated.

Because Hasbro owns both MLP and Wizards of the Coast, I believe that until directly stated othwise Equestria is a plane in the Multiverse and any and all elements of DND or Magic the Gathering or even WoW can show up with little provocation. Anything in the phb, dmg or monster manual can exist in MLP. (Though likely in Tartarus.)

That answer enough?

On the other issue,
Edit: old many paragraphs replaced with one.
I realized all that I had written here makes exactly zero sense because I posted comments about the wrong story by a completely different author. Would have been good advice for him.

You may initiate laughter.

Ha, I understand completely. Also, the D&D question may have something to do with a story, but it just has to do with D&D.
