    Updates and Such

Well, as a thunderstorm rolls overhead (and hopefully doesn't knock power out), I thought I'd offer some updates on what I've been up to.

Long story short, I'm pretty much in gaming overload at the moment.

    Well, color me impressed.

All 78 episodes on 2 discs, the translation is just as solid as the Hulu version, the subtitles are on by default, and they even translated the mid-episode character cards.

Went to go see the MLP Movie last night and... · 8:23am Oct 9th, 2017

SPOILERS AFTER THE BREAK!

So Brady and I went on a double date with a brony and pegasister to go see the MLP Movie, and, I'm very sorry to have to say this but...

It... Wasn't... That great.

Unfortunately, out of the four of us, I believe I have the lowest opinion of it.

Three of the songs were pretty good, none of them really catchy, and the rest were forgettable. Winter Wrap Up, At The Gala, Hearts as Strong As Horses, In Our Town, We'll Make Our Mark... These songs stuck in my head for weeks after airing. For all the ear worms Daniel Ingram has served up over the last seven years, I can certainly forgive duds, but it sucks that none of the songs from the film hung in my ear.

For the most part, the Mane Six are par for the course character-wise (even AJ, who barely does anything), except for one very, very sore thumb. The second act culminates in what I believe are Twilight's two absolute stupidest stunts ever in the seven years I've known her. I'll go so far as to call it out-of-character. If that's what was needed to top off the second act, then the foundation was all wrong. Having her trust shaken by Capper might, might excuse her trying to steal the hippogriff pearl, but it certainly doesn't excuse her lashing out at Pinkie when they called her out on making them distractions.

Tempest was decent as a villain, with probably the best song in the film, but the main baddie she worked under was insufferable; a childish idiot with completely unexplained motives who was high on power and accomplished it via... Unexplained plot devices. Put simply, Liev Shreiber deserved better. And when all is said and done, and Canterlot Castle is in ruins, how to possibly fix everything? Voila; unexplained plot device to the rescue!

Cast-wise, Liev was the only name I recognized. For the Friendship Festival's main attraction, do we bring back Sapphire Shores or Rara with a song to put The Magic Inside of You to shame? Nope. We need to cast a new character, with her mane blocking her eyes, voiced by another pop singer I've never heard of, with less than a dozen lines and a forgettable song for the credits.

In short, the TV show has been going very strong and steady for seven years, with a dud every half-season, if that, and it's a shame they couldn't pull off some of what makes the show so magical for this 90-minute runtime. The show is seven years old, and this film is too little, too late. I can only imagine if it came years earlier, maybe if one of the finales was given this treatment; could you imagine Twilight vs Tirek with this kind of animation budget?

I'm very sorry to say, I find myself largely agreeing with the 41 the film currently has on Metacritic.

For a movie made for kids, I think older moviegoers have been expecting too much from this film. It's tanking because the story itself was pretty bad. Also, there are the internet leaks. People are already finding the movie online.

I set the bar pretty low for this film when I went to see it, focusing on just having fun. What we got was pretty much 'Alicorns are Useless' or 'How I forgot Seven Years of Lessons and an Ascension and Learned to Yell at My Besties'. The Storm King was 'meh', but I did like Tempest Shadow.

All in all, if you have kids, it's a great movie to watch with them. If you're by yourself or watching it with other bronies, try not to have an anurism while breaking down the film with your buddies. There were a ton of holes in the plot and I mean a ton. More than enough to make Chrysalis jealous, at any rate.

Still, it's a cute film and at least they didn't go with Sony's pitch to make it like the Smurfs...

Yeah, pretty much. It was "okay" in most regards. But if I ranked this along with the four EqG films, this would be dead last.

Huh. I rank it way above the EqG films—as in hundreds of times better. It's got its plot holes, but this is a movie you watch to have fun, not a mystery to dissect. And if you watch it with its intended purpose in mind, it definitely succeeds. My personal score is 8/10.

As a teenager I enjoyed it. I agree that the main baddie was incompetent. Initially I thought Tempest was the main villian from trailers. But I did enjoy knowing how incompetent the main villian was when you look at it in the comedic angle.

I was not expecting it to break barriers which was probably why I enjoyed. Having high expectations for a movie can made a movie feel bland if it does not meet your standards. Too bad you feel that way.

As for the songs; Most of the songs sung by the cast I love especially. Tempesr one was realistic and sympathetic. Cappers song screamed shady but charming especially when the song is the first one to incorporate Tango Music in mlp songs.

Overall, I had fun. That's all that mattered to me.

P.S. Try making a crazy cat lady joke what with Rarity being infatuated by Capper in the movie (furthermore with her owning a cat) in Letters

4692218 Same here. The movie's better than you give it credit for in a lot of ways, and this is from someone who was skeptical going into it. I wouldn't really take the critics reviews too seriously, because they're not going to have the knowledge of the show to judge it on. And even then the film seems to be rocking it pretty well on Rotten Tomatoes. I just hope it can keep an audience for weeks two onwards, especially since all the YouTube trailers are still saying "In Theaters Friday" instead of "Now playing in theaters everywhere".

So basically what you're saying is that the movie is on par with every other merchandise-driven series based animated film from the 80s? Logical inconsistencies that can't be reasoned away, main established characters that are absent for unexplained reasons, new characters being brought in for no reason, and heavy reliance on dues ex machina to resolve the entire plot?

Yeah, I feel ya. From an older audience's standpoint, it was pretty meh, though I did actually enjoy the music quite a bit. There were a bunch of times when I just said, "Wait, really? Oh, come on!" Others I thought, "Hey, not bad!"
I mean, this was clearly geared for the target demographic, and their parents, who likely haven't paid as much attention to the episodes. I'm not surprised that the writers didn't put as much in for the older audience, since I heard this was started three years ago. I mean, they did at least make Derpy the reason the rest of the movie existed at all, so that was a plus for me. That, and the fact that I went to a 6:45pm showing and was (I'm pretty sure) the only Brony there, and didn't get stared at (even smiled at in a few cases) was also nice.

It was eh, but overall harmless. After seeing the movie AND the season 7 finale, I’m convinced that the scripts were switched. I know it’s a kid’s film, but who takes the kids? I’m taking my sister to see this film (I saw it online) and I know they could have done more. There were some good songs, Open Your Eyes and I have warmed up to Rainbow after seeing it in the film. I liked the animation, though took getting used to. I liked Capper and Tempest. Storm King I thought was quite the ham at first until the end and I think Alucard says it best

I have had people tell me that it’s a kid’s film, them I point to the series and to the Tirek fight. They could have done so much more and led me to some disappointment. I didn’t have high hopes for it since I had no real intent to see it outside of taking my sister. But I was holding it to the standards of the show at least. In that regard, it felt like it was a TV film of an okay episode.

Me and my entire group lost it at Fluttershy's therapy session with the storm minion.

And I think the best song is Open Up Your Eyes. Ingram STILL does no wrong when it comes to villain songs.

4692578
Oh yeah, I heard all the adults in the audience (myself included, obviously) at the very least get a chuckle at that Flutters moment. :yay: And most definitely, Open Up Your Eyes was really good.

10/10 no glim glam.

Seriously, I'd give it a 6/10 with 5 being average. I saw it with my friends while drunk so I had a blast when watching it, even if the quality was lacking... Because with enough booze almost anythibg becomes enjoyable.

Id have to agree with you for the most part, but you have to look at the bright side: now I get to shitpost on /mlp/ about Twilight dying for our sins! Or jokes with Tempest's name!

4692578
Alright, Miles, having not seen the movie, I'm curious. What sort of sequence of events of developments do you feel would be necessary to justify Twilight's OOC moments in the film?

I'm very glad someone agrees with me. For all the hype, for all it could have been, I was severely underwhelmed.

All though I did enjoy it, which on my end is a A-, I do understand that you are entitled to your own opinions, kinda like "a certain episode"

I do love the movie & all, but the pacing is one thing that concerned me. But hey, at least this movie was great, and not turned to shit like the SMB movie. However, I do like the way they portrayed Tempest as a Starlight 2.0 in a different situation.

But hey, I respect your thoughts man. At least you gave the movie a try.

but it certainly doesn't excuse her lashing out at Pinkie when they called her out on making them distractions.

Yeah, how dare Twilight have character flaws. It's not like she sang a song about not being flawless not too long ago.
