MLP Movie review (Spoilers) · 3:31am Oct 9th, 2017

Hey all, this is a bit new for me, but today I’ll be giving my opinion in this review of the new MLP movie. I saw the movie this weekend, and I felt the need to add my input on what I thought of it.

So first of all, leading up to the movie, I was extremely optimistic. This movie had been announced quite some time ago, a couple years, so I had a lot of time to anticipate it’s arrival. There were theories and “plot leaks” here and there, but mid summer this year was the first time we actually got a good look at any real plot. Two main trailers were released, which only added to the hype. I loved the look of the new animation, and all of the new and unfamiliar characters were a nice surprise. In order for me to enjoy it, I hoped for a unique plot line unlike anything in the show. I was pleased to find that’s just how it was. So on to the movie itself.

The beginning was a bit slow for me, but they needed to reintroduce the characters so it was alright. I Liked the look of Tempest in the trailers, but in the movie itself I just loved everything about her. Her design, voice, and there was just something so relatable about her. I was a bit worried about the animation, as it seemed a lot of people were, but I had no complaints about it in the movie. It looked great. Was it perfect? No, but it was pretty dang good, especially compared to the regular animation of the show.

The new characters introduced in my opinion were all great and unique in their own way, adding their own bit to the plot of the movie. My question is through how have we never seen any of these creatures before? It’s now canon that there are Cats, Bird/Parrots, Hippogriffs, whatever the storm guards and Grubber are, and those freaks from Klugetown. There are so many new possibilities for fanfics and places to write about I hope I see great author stories on here take advantage of.

On Klugetown: did anyone notice how dark this place considering it’s in the MLP universe? There was slavery, bidding of living things and looked like there was pretty much crime everywhere? I’m assuming the Royal Sisters have to know this place exists so it brings up the question, do they not interfere with places like this because it’s beyond the border, or do they just not care about anything beyond their utopia? Also, when Capper first showed up we had our first penis joke, which was pretty surprising but when you remove a TV-Y rating it opens a lot of possibilities.

As far as songs go, I thought they killed it. There were six main songs:
We got this
I’m the friend you need
Time to be awesome
One small thing
Open up your eyes
Rainbow

By far the best song was Open up your eyes sung by Tempest. I could talk for an hour why this was arguably the best song ever in the series but I’ll keep it brief. Her voice was great, a villain song is always pretty epic, and the circumstances it was sung under added to the song. I felt like in a way it summarized the plot of the movie. Other than Tirek I guess, this was the first time Equestria was truly screwed with no hope of redemption. The ponies had solved all of their problems like Twilight said “Trusting strangers, making friends with everyone’s we meet and sonic rainbooming and everything will just work out” except now that isn’t true. It hadn't worked and now the ponies had no plans left. The line “Give up your sweet fantasy land” should’ve opened Twilights eyes at that point that the world wasn’t all what she might’ve thought it to be, everything she had seen and experienced on her journey proved that, and now her utopia was about to go under too. The end of the song where she sees the city destroyed surrounded by airships and dark clouds was one of the best moments in the series. These villains were just so dang good. The other songs were also good in their own ways, Rainbow sung by real singer Sia. The only song I didn’t quite enjoy was Capper’s song. It was just...meh. Time to be awesome was good, but how did just singing a song convince the Pirates to just throw the Storm King out the window? Uh...he’s still a threat and could come for you but because some pony sings to you about being awesome you’re okay with that? The song was still pretty good so whatever I guess.

Anyone else wish the Storm King had more screen time? I did because I thought he was awesome. What was his final goal though? We got he just wants to be the most powerful creature in the world, but once he had the staff where was he going to go, and do? I guess we’ll never know. Rest in pieces buddy, you were great while you lasted. Lastly, I really hope they don’t just dump these new characters and we never see them again. The movie takes place between season 7 and 8, so I still have hope we’ll see them again. Even just Tempest at the very least. I thought in the end Celestia would fix her horn, but apparently not. Maybe some day. Oh, and Fizzlepop Berrytwist. Pfft. I swear there was actually a huge amount laughter in the theatre.

Overall Rating: 89/100
Best new character: Tempest Shadow
Best song: Open up your eyes

Great job to all the producers, voice actors, and staff! Thanks for this experience!
