State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Fic recs, September 18th! · 9:23pm Sep 18th, 2017

I apparently hadn't realized at the time I read it that Captain Sand had also done a reading of Ruirik's The River!

Cerulean Voice and Arcelia are looking for someone cool to help edit an ongoing fic! Are you a bad enough dude? >:V

Maaan, I was gonna get a whole bunch of stuff read today, but then I panicked and nothing worked out right. D: At least I filled in the spaces with stuff longer than 3k for once!

Twilight is suddenly struck by the true meaning of immortality.
The bulk of this story takes the form of a very peculiar, but effective, way of getting inside a character's head and showing madness, though it's more like hysteria, in the comical sense. I liked it. As the genre tag says, this is immortality the-opposite-of-angst, and seeing Twilight look forward to forever is refreshing. :)

That Changeling's a Pony! by Raugos

Genre: Comedy
Maxilla's proclivities have finally caught up with her.
This is a goofy bit of fun, a take on your classic changeling-related conflict with a whole bunch going on besides. If there's anything I appreciate about, it's that, while Maxilla is the one being ganged up on, the story has pretty much no sympathy for her. All changelings, other than Thorax, are jerks. :B It's not perfect, stretching on a bit in the middle, and with a few jokes that don't quite land, but it is fun, and I had a good time with it. Even that reference to a certain other fanfic. XD

Forward by Garnot
Genre: Changeling Fic
How does a changeling survive outside the hive?
This is a fast-paced story that often left me feeling like I was completely lost. The ending, however, shows that to be at least somewhat deliberate: the very final scene explains everything, from events to theme. Our protagonist lone changeling also presents some intriguing conceptualizing about changelings as a whole. So overall, it's interesting, though it may leave some readers wishing for something they could latch on to.

The Next Best Thing by Posh
Sequel to "Teach Me Goodness"
Genre: Uplifting Slice of Life
Starlight and Spike find an intruder in the library, but she isn't there to cause trouble.
The story formerly known as Bonitatem Doce Me (I will never stop beating that drum) is a tough act to follow. This story does its best, but doesn't quite reach those lofty peaks. That puts it squarely in "really good" territory, however, and if you enjoyed the first, you should definitely read the sequel. The really clever part here is the use of Starlight: she's the show's go-to character for "reformed villain needs someone to commiserate with", after all, so why not give Diamond Tiara a scene with her? I also really like her opening banter with Spike, even if she comes off as maybe too awkward, more than once. As for Diamond Tiara, the deep, soul-crunching look into character continues on from the first story, and I was once again moved. This is really impactful stuff, so make sure you don't miss it.

Den Fjerde Væg by Meta Four
Sequel to Beauty Will Tear Us Apart
Genre: Philosophical
Ditzy discovers Pinkie Pie is another Royal Secret Service Agent. But what is she an Agent of?
Hey, I'm finishing a trilogy! :D That title, fyi, is Danish for "The Fourth Wall", because Pinkie Pie. Like its predecessor, it pales in comparison to the original, again because it lacks that newness. But it does make up for things by being a collection of off-the-wall explanations for inconsistencies in the show that perchance did not actually need explaining! And it's so much fun! The best part, though, is Twilight learning about the fourth wall, which leads to not just her, but Pinkie having existential crises, and these crises then being resolved in a heartwarming and uplifting manner. Also, there are tons of horse puns. If you enjoyed either of the previous stories, well, hopefully you've already read this one, because it takes me forever to get to things. :B

He's really got a talent. :D Oddly, that threequel is more of a Pinkie story.
