Real Portals To Other Realms: Part One

In fictional stories throughout history, authors have written about portals that are able to transport characters to parallel dimensions, alternate universes, alternate timelines, or far off planets. The characters either know about the portal or find them by chance. These types off stories have a very prominent place in popular culture, some of the most popular being The Chronicles of Narnia and Star vs. the Forces of Evil.

But portals that can transport you to other places in the multiverse aren't just fiction; they are real. At least according to the local people from various parts of the world who have either seen the portals for themselves or have heard legends about them passed down through multiple generations. There have been many stories about these portals that have cropped up over the years and some are even very well-documented by various paranormal research communities.

These are just a few of these documented portals.

Note: These are mainly derived from cultural legends, ancient stories about Gods, and local myths. You don't have to believe they are real. But it is fun to think about, regardless of what you choose to believe. And it is also great material for writing stories. So I just thought I would share.

First Real Portal: Doorway to the Gods

In the Tumacacori Mountains, located some thirty-odd miles south of Tucson, Arizona there is a red, natural stone archway that many people claim to be the “Doorway of the Gods”—a strange stone arch portal to another time and space.

In the 1950’s, a local tribesman was aiding treasure hunters who were searching for gold in the mountains. He told them a story of his people, dating back to the 1800’s, of three tribesman who had discovered the archway while riding in the desert. The story goes that when one of them walked through, he simply disappeared. The other two, believing they had encroached on sacred land, fled the scene.

The helpful tribesman stated he had also seen a strange incident at the alleged doorway. While out in the desert, a sudden rain storm hit the area and turned the skies grey with clouds. As he turned to leave, he caught a glimpse of the archway, and saw that the skies through the arch were clear blue. He walked closer to it, seeing that the archway’s image of the mountain range was the same and the only difference was the sky. However, he too, became scared, mounted his horse and returned home.

He told the treasure hunters that only his people knew of the stories. He had only spoke of it because they had shown him kindness and to serve warning to not walk through the archway should they come across it.

Second Real Portal: The Place Of The Gods

The Abu Sir Pyramids, site of Abu Ghurab, has claimed to be one of the oldest sites on the planet. Within Abu Ghurab, lies an ancient platform made of alabaster (Egyptian crystal) and is said to be in tune with the “vibration” of Earth. It can also “open the senses” in order for a person to communicate and “be one” with higher, sacred energies of the Universe. Essentially, it is a stargate and the sacred energies were the Neters (Gods). Because of this, many think that the Abu Ghurab area can heal diseases, strengthen the physical and mental body as well as help us communicate with gods and the energies of the universe.

Interestingly, legends of their communication and way of travel between their world and ours almost mirrors the legends of the Cherokee Native Americans. The Cherokee tell of how “thought beings”—who are formless—would travel on a “wave of sound” from their home in the Pleiades Star System to Earth. These tales are similar to those found in many Native American tribes that also say there are areas in the Earth where beings can travel to other worlds by using vibrations.

As the legends of Abu Ghurab being a stargate, there are also signs of what some would perceive to be advanced technology having been used to create the site. One example is the perfectly precise circular markings that have been drilled into the alabaster.

Third Real Portal: Ancient Stone Arrangement In Lake Michigan

In 2007, while searching for the remains of shipwrecks, scientists discovered a stone structure 12 meters (40 ft.) below the surface of Lake Michigan. Thought to be 9,000 years old, the structure has been dubbed Michigan’s equivalent of Stonehenge. The discovery was made by professor of underwater archaeology at Northwestern Michigan University, Mark Holley, and his colleague, Brian Abbott. One thing of particular interest was a carving on one of the stones of a mastodon—which is believed to have become extinct 10,000 years ago—a possible indication of the structure’s age.

The location of the site has been kept secret, at least for now. This is part of an agreement with the local Native American tribes who wish to keep the amount of visitors to a minimum. While a lot of mainstream scientists are skeptical about the age of the site, and if it even has any relevance, many believe that it is the remains of a stargate or wormhole. The site has also claimed several bizarre disappearances and gained the title of “The Michigan Triangle”.

In 1891, a schooner named the Thomas Hume vanished into thin air along with all seven of its crew while sailing on the lake. In 1921, the 11 people who were aboard the Rosa Belle disappeared without a trace, but their boat was found floating lifelessly in the water. In 1937, while on board the O.M. McFarland as it made its way along Lake Michigan, Captain Donner retired to his quarters to get some much needed rest after a long shift on deck. Three hours later, the second mate went to wake his captain. Finding the door locked from the inside, and with no response from the captain, he eventually broke down the door to the room. With the captain’s quarters empty and with all the windows locked shut, Captain Donner had simply vanished.

Fourth Real Portal: Stonehenge

One of the most well-known structures on the planet, if only by name, is the ancient rock formation known as Stonehenge. It is also one of the most contested and debated sites in history, both as to when it was built and to what its true purpose might have been. Mainstream historians claim that the famous arrangement was built around 5,000 years ago, partly from bluestones that were quarried from a site 386 kilometers (240 mi) away. To some though, this notion is absurd.

Geologist Brian John states that there been no evidence for this claim and no evidence that the alleged quarry even existed. It is said that when the first settlements were built in the area, 5,000 years ago, Stonehenge was already there and fully built. The ancient site is said to sit where 14 ley lines converge and some feel, along with other similar ancient sites, this essentially makes it an energy portal or stargate.

At least one incident in recent history may support this seemingly crazy theory. In August 1971, a group of hippies apparently disappeared at Stonehenge while trying to tap into the “vibrations” of the site. At around 2 o’clock in the morning, without any warning, lightning bolts suddenly struck and a severe storm was unleashed onto the area. According to the story, a policeman who happened to be on duty and in the area, recalls seeing a “blue light” coming from the stones – a local farmer also stated he saw this. Screams could be heard from the area. By the time the policeman had made his way to the site, all that remained was the odd tent peg from the reveler’s tents and the damp remains of a campfire.

Fifth Real Portal: The Ancient Sumerian Stargate

Sumerian culture was among the first Euro-Asian civilizations to conduct and document research about the universe. Countless artifacts that were discovered at the delta of the Tigris and Euphrates feature descriptions of constellations.

Some of the seals and other bar-reliefs depict gods that are going through portals between the two worlds.

There is a famous Sumerian seal that shows a Sumerian god appearing from a portal of his world into ours. The god appears to be on a staircase that is moving away from the person viewing the seal. On each side of the emerging god, there are strange shimmering columns of water. Another Sumerian artifact that claims to show evidence of stargates is that of Ninurta. Ninurta not only appears to be wearing a modern day wristwatch, but is also using his finger to press what appears to be a button on the wall of the gateway he is standing in.

Author Elizabeth Vegh has written several books on the ancient Sumerian gods and kings and their alleged use of stargates in ancient times. One of her main conclusions is that there is a stargate in the Euphrates River, and has been buried and lost under the ruins of the Mesopotamian city of Eridu for thousands of years. According to her claims, the portal is now flooded by the Euphrates. It comes as no surprise that such object existed given the amount of evidence that the Sumerian culture believed in the existence of more than just one world.

Vegh also states that the biblical verse in Chapter 9 of the Book of Revelations speaks of this stargate. The verse reads, “(1)Then the fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth, and it was given the key to the pit of the abyss. (2)The star opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke rose out of it like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the pit. (3)And out of the smoke, locusts descended on the earth. . .”

Although most scholars would agree that the word “abyss” refers to a large body of water, Vegh argues that, as its used in ancient texts, it is more likely to have a meaning more akin to portal.

Sixth Real Portal: Gate of the Sun

Located near Lake Titicaca, Gate of the Sun is considered to be a megalithic structure. Believed by some to be a portal to the land of the gods, the “Gate of the Sun” in Bolivia shares much of its legends with other similar sites in the Andes region. Tiahuanaco city is said to be one of the most important sites of ancient America, with legends stating that the Sun god, Viracocha, appeared in Tiahuanaco and made it “the place of creation”—the place he chose to start the human race.

Carved from one block of stone, thought to be 14,000 years old, and weighing 10 tons, the gateway displays what appears to be human beings with “rectangular helmets”. This has led many researchers to state the purpose of the gate is indeed connected to something astronomical, although this is hotly debated. The top-middle of the arch features a carving of the supposed sun god and shows what look to be rays of light appearing behind and forcing their way around all sides of the deities head.

Although it now stands upright, when it was found by European explorers in the mid-1800’s, it was said to have been lying horizontally. It also appears to have a large crack to the top right of the arch. It is unknown how this happened. Because of the structural damage and the fact that it was found lying on the ground separated from any other major structures, it is believed that it wasn’t in its original location

Seventh Real Portal: Ranmasu Uyana Stargate

Located in Sri Lanka, Sakwala Chakraya is one of the most mysterious archaeological sites on Earth. The legend says that the structure is a stargate that can be used for space travel and the engravings on the granite rock are the maps that allow the passenger to navigate.

Carved on a massive piece of stone wall and mostly hidden between the boulders and cave systems of Ranmasu Uyana, is what is believed to be a star map or star chart. The symbols carved on the rock are said to be a code that opens the star gate and allows the opener to travel from this world to other areas of the universe. Directly opposite the star map, are four stone seats or chairs.

The name of the star chart is Sakwala Chakraya, which is believed to mean “The rotating circle of the Universe.” According to Sinhala interpretation, Sakwala means universe and Chakraya means a rotating circle or disc.

Such discs are not solely characteristic of the Hindu religion because Native American, Egyptian, and many other cultures also had circular maps to the stars.

In many ancient Native American legends, stargates or portals were represented by rotating circles. Similar star maps have also been found in other ancient sites said to be stargates, such as the Abu Ghurab in Egypt and many more ancient sites in the Andes of South America. Although ancient cultures believed that these sites had major spiritual importance that connected them with the gods as well as other worlds/ realms, mainstream archeologists disregard the notion that the Sakwla Chakraya is an actual portal or stargate. Rather, it is a symbolic representation of one. Some archeologists believe that the engravings found at Sakwala Chakraya might simply be an early map of the world.

Eighth Real Portal: Abydos, Egypt

One of the oldest cities of Ancient Egypt, Abydos is perhaps one of the most important sites in Egyptology and certainly one of the most interesting. In particular, the Temple of Seti I appears to show hieroglyphs of modern flying machines, such as a helicopter, as well as what some would describe as a flying saucer.

Perhaps even more amazing is how a lot of the site was discovered. A lady named Dorothy Eady had claimed to be the reincarnation of an Egyptian peasant girl named Bentreshyt and was the secret lover of Pharaoh Seti. She had become pregnant with his child, but before he could learn of the pregnancy, the peasant girl took her own life. Now in the 20th century, Dorothy was able to transcribe ancient Egyptian texts and even knew where the archaeologists should dig to excavate the remains of the ancient city. She seemingly knew where everything was, such as where secret chambers were and the location of gardens that had long since been buried. By the time they discovered precisely where she said they would be, people very much believed she was genuine.

Strangely, people also witnessed Dorothy pressing on certain stones in the walls, as if she was expecting something to happen when she did so. It was as if she was trying to open a secret door or gateway. In fact, she had already spoken about these hidden doors that used to be there. In 2003, Michael Schratt, a military aerospace engineer, stated that Abydos did sit on a naturally occurring stargate. Even more controversially, that the US government was very much aware of this and had actually utilized it.

Was this what Eady was looking for when she was pressing stones in the walls? Aside from the unusual helicopter hieroglyphs, comparisons have been made to the paintings of Egyptian boats that were said to carry its passengers to the next world in the stars, being very similar to how modern day scientists would portray a wormhole, or at least the theory of one.

Ninth Real Portal: Gobekli Tepe

Regarded as the oldest stone temple in the world, the Gobekli Tepe site features several rings of huge “T” shaped stone pillars, each engraved with a carving of an animal such as a lion or a sheep. Two of the pillars sit in the middle of these circles, almost creating an archway of sorts. The archway within these circles are said to be the remains of portals or stargates, which the ancient people who resided here used as a portal to the “sky world.”

The “T” columns are very similar to the “Gate of the Gods” at Hayu Marca in Peru. Interestingly, the Inca people spoke of a connection to the people from the Pleiades star system, which is also T-shaped. Like other alleged portals, Gobekli Tepe is situated where two ley lines meet. Although the site was recorded as far back as the 1960’s, it wasn’t until the mid-90’s when the T-Shaped pillars were discovered. As for its true age, estimations date it around 12,000 years old.

The “T” columns are also found in South America, which makes things more interesting and mysterious since we have no idea how ancient people could build such structures in different regions of the world – without using sophisticated tools or modern knowledge.

Tenth Real Portal: Sedona Vortexes

Sedona, a small town in Arizona was once known by the Native American tribes as Nawanda, and at one time, a most sacred city to them. It is said the Red Rocks of the deserts that surround the small town can create vortexes with the capability of transporting people to another realm or dimension. Native Americans believed these rocks were spiritually charged, while sounds emanating from them have been reported.

The local Native Americans say that the red rocks of the desert around Sedona create vortexes that can transport dead matter and beings to other realms and dimensions, due to rocks having a higher frequency.

One interesting story tells that in the 1950s, treasure hunters were traveling to Sedona. After hearing about vortexes they decided to learn more, so they went closer. The bravest treasure hunter went through one of the archways and disappeared. He was never seen again.

Eleventh Real Portal: Peruvian Stargate

A huge mysterious door-like structure was discovered in the Hayu Marca mountain region of Southern Peru. Hayu Marca, 35 kilometers from the city of Puno has long been revered by local Indians as the "City of the Gods", and has never been fully explored because of the rugged mountain terrain. Although no actual city has ever been discovered, many of the rock formations of the region resemble buildings and artificial structures. The door, or the "Puerta de Hayu Marca" (Gate of the gods/spirits) has been at some time in the distant past carved out of a natural rock face and in all measures exactly seven meters in height by seven meters in width with a smaller alcove in the center at the base, which measures in at just under two meters in height.

Jose Luis Delgado Mamani stumbled across the structure in 1996 while trekking through the surrounding foothills trying to familiarize himself with the area as his job is as a guide for mountaineering tourists. "When I saw the structure for the first time, I almost passed out. I have dreamed of such a construction repeatedly over the years, but in the dream the path to the door was paved with pink marble, and with pink marble statues lining either side of the path. In the dream, I also saw that the smaller door was open and there was a brilliant blue light coming from what looked like a shimmering tunnel. I have commented to my family many times about these dreams, and so when I finally gazed upon the doorway, it was like a revelation from God... How do you make order of such a strange occurrence?"

After discovering the door , Mamani contacted archeological authorities in Puno, La Paz and Lima, and within a short time the area was besieged with archeologists and Inca historians. It turned out that the native Indians of the region had a legend that spoke of "A gateway to the lands of the gods", and in that legend it was said that in times long past, great heroes had gone to join their gods and passed through the gate for a glorious new life of immortality, and on rare occasions those men returned for a short time with their gods to "inspect all the lands in the kingdom" through the gate.

Another legend tells of the time when the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Peru, and looted gold and precious stones from the Inca tribes - and one Incan priest of the temple of the seven rays named Aramu Maru fled from his temple with a sacred golden disk known as "The key of the gods of the seven rays", and hid in the mountains of Hayu Marca. He eventually came upon the doorway which was being watched by shaman priests. He showed them the key of the gods and a ritual was performed with the conclusion of a magical occurrence initiated by the golden disk which opened the portal, and according to the legend blue light did emanate from a tunnel inside. The priest Aramu Maru handed the golden disk to the shaman and then passed through the portal "never to be seen again".

Archeologists have observed a small hand sized circular depression on the right hand side of the small entranceway, and have theorized that this is where a small disk could be placed and held by the rock. According to some individuals who have laid their hands on the small door, a feeling of energy flowing has been commented on, as well as strange experiences such as visions of stars, columns of fire and the sounds of unusual rhythmic music.

Others have said that they have perceived tunnels on the interior of the structure, though nobody as yet has found a gap that would illustrate the door opening, on the contrary the professional opinion is that there is no actual door, for the frame and the entranceway and the back of the alcove are all carved from the same rock.

The Gate of the Sun

It is interesting to note that the structure undeniably resembles the Gate of the Sun at Tiahuanaco and five other archeological sites which link together by grid lines intersecting each other exactly at the point where the plateau and Lake Titicaca is located. News reports from the region tell of sizable UFO activity in all of these areas, especially at Lake Titicaca. Most of the reports describe glowing blue spheres and bright white disk shaped objects. The afore mentioned legend concludes with a prophecy that the door of the gods will one day open "many times bigger than it actually is..." and allow the gods to return in their "sun ships...".

Twelfth Real Portal: Wormholes

A wormhole or Einstein Rosen bridge is a hypothetical topological feature that would fundamentally be a shortcut connecting two separate points in spacetime. A wormhole, in theory, might be able to connect extremely far distances such as a billion light years or more, short distances such as a few feet, different universes, and different points in time. A wormhole is much like a tunnel with two ends, each at separate points in spacetime. For a simplified notion of a wormhole, space can be visualized as a two-dimensional (2D) surface. In this case, a wormhole would appear as a hole in that surface, lead into a 3D tube (the inside surface of a cylinder), then re-emerge at another location on the 2D surface with a hole similar to the entrance. An actual wormhole would be analogous to this, but with the spatial dimensions raised by one. For example, instead of circular holes on a 2D plane, the entry and exit points could be visualized as spheres in 3D space.

Supermassive black holes laced with dark matter could produce 'tunnels' in space. Dark matter is one of the most elusive components of our universe, with scientists trying to find physical evidence of it to match our mathematical models of space. While we have been so far unable to see it or measure it directly, physicists believe the enigmatic material fills in the gaps in the universe, while matter makes up the 'stuff', like planets and stars. But a new paper has suggested that adding a sprinkling of dark matter to a supermassive black hole could result in one of the strangest objects in the universe - a wormhole.

Ripped from the pages of a sci-fi novel, physicists have crafted a wormhole that tunnels a magnetic field through space. This device can transmit the magnetic field from one point in space to another point, through a path that is magnetically invisible. From a magnetic point of view, this device acts like a wormhole, as if the magnetic field was transferred through an extra special dimension.

The idea of a wormhole comes from Albert Einstein's theories. In 1935, Einstein and colleague Nathan Rosen realized that the general theory of relativity allowed for the existence of bridges that could link two different points in space-time. Theoretically these Einstein-Rosen bridges, or wormholes, could allow something to tunnel instantly between great distances (though the tunnels in this theory are extremely tiny, so ordinarily wouldn't fit a space traveler). So far, no one has found evidence that space-time wormholes actually exist.

The concept of a time machine typically conjures up images of an implausible plot device used in a few too many science-fiction storylines. But according to Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which explains how gravity operates in the universe, real-life time travel isn't just a vague fantasy. Traveling forward in time is an uncontroversial possibility, according to Einstein's theory. In fact, physicists have been able to send tiny particles called muons, which are similar to electrons, forward in time by manipulating the gravity around them. That's not to say the technology for sending humans 100 years into the future will be available anytime soon, though. Time travel to the past, however, is even less understood. Still, astrophysicist Eric W. Davis argues that it's possible. All you need, he says, is a wormhole, which is a theoretical passageway through space-time that is predicted by relativity.

In physics and fiction, a wormhole is a hypothetical topological feature of spacetime that would be, fundamentally, a "shortcut" through spacetime. Although they are very popular in science fiction, there is no actual evidence that they exist. For a simple visual explanation of a wormhole, consider spacetime visualized as a two-dimensional (2-D) surface. If this surface is "folded" along a (non-existent) third dimension, it allows one to picture a wormhole "bridge". A wormhole is, in theory, much like a tunnel with two ends each in separate points in space-time.

There is no observational evidence for wormholes, and, although wormholes are valid solutions in general relativity, this is only true if exotic matter can be used to stabilize them. Even if the wormhole is stabilized, the slightest fluctuation in space would collapse it. If such exotic matter (that is, matter with negative mass) does not exist, all wormhole-containing solutions to Einstein's field equations are vacuum solutions, which require an impossible vacuum, free of all matter and energy. There is no evidence or experimental suggestion that wormholes do exist, except as predictions of certain (exotic) physical models. Wormholes allowed by current physical theories might arise spontaneously, but would vanish nearly instantaneously, and would likely be undetectable.

Thirteenth Real Portal: White Holes

In general relativity, a white hole is a hypothetical region of spacetime which cannot be entered from the outside, although matter and light can escape from it. In this sense, it is the reverse of a black hole, which can only be entered from the outside and from which matter and light cannot escape. White holes appear in the theory of eternal black holes. In addition to a black hole region in the future, such a solution of the Einstein field equations has a white hole region in its past. However, this region does not exist for black holes that have formed through gravitational collapse, nor are there any known physical processes through which a white hole could be formed. No white hole has ever been observed. Also, the laws of thermodynamics say that the net entropy in the universe can either increase or remain constant. This rule is violated by white holes, as they tend to decrease entropy.

Like black holes, white holes have properties like mass, charge, and angular momentum. They attract matter like any other mass, but objects falling towards a white hole would never actually reach the white hole's event horizon (though in the case of the maximally extended Schwarzschild solution, discussed below, the white hole event horizon in the past becomes a black hole event horizon in the future, so any object falling towards it will eventually reach the black hole horizon). Imagine a gravitational field, without a surface. Acceleration due to gravity is the greatest on the surface of any body. But since black holes lack a surface, acceleration due to gravity increases exponentially, but never reaches a final value as there is no considered surface in a singularity.

In quantum mechanics, the black hole emits Hawking radiation and so can come to thermal equilibrium with a gas of radiation. Because a thermal-equilibrium state is time-reversal-invariant, Stephen Hawking argued that the time reverse of a black hole in thermal equilibrium is again a black hole in thermal equilibrium. This may imply that black holes and white holes are the same object. The Hawking radiation from an ordinary black hole is then identified with the white-hole emission. Hawking's semi-classical argument is reproduced in a quantum mechanical AdS/CFT treatment, where a black hole in anti-de Sitter space is described by a thermal gas in a gauge theory, whose time reversal is the same as itself.

If one thinks of a black hole sucking matter in and a white hole theoretically being the byproduct of a black hole (essentially existing on the other side of a black hole and pushing matter out) then black holes in conjunction with white holes might be a natural occurring wormhole, connecting two areas of the universe together. The trick would be surviving the gravitational force of a black hole which could potentially crush anything that was pulled into it and form it into a different type of energy that is then spewed out from the white hole.

When it comes to literature example of multiverse exploration I think I like best Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny.

As for the real life myth examples I am surprised there isn't a Nordic example. I don't know much about Nordic Mythology but I was sure it had several worlds so I would guess there had to be some sort of connection? Or am I thinking too much of Marvel...damn Marvel distracting me from really cool mythology.

4665213 Norse Mythology, Irish Mythology, and various mythologies from different parts of Europe and Scandinavia contain stories about people journeying into other worlds, dimensions, or times and even the Gods themselves coming from those other worlds, dimensions, times, and so on to visit Earth. This is going to be something I talk about in another blog entry on the subject. :)

I have never read Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. But I will have to check it out. Thank you for the recommendation.

Holy crap.... maybe one of these portals will send us to Equestria! :D

4665364 You never know. One of the just might. ;)

4665380 If I find a portal to Equestria, I will let you know. ;)

4665392 You are very welcome, my friend. :)
