I Just Realized That There's a Pony... · 5:06pm Sep 1st, 2017
...that ticks me off just as much, if not more so, than Maud Pie does.
Wow, what a shock! I didn't realize it before because said pony is a comic character and thus doesn't pop up as often. But, oh-ho-ho, when this character shows up whenever I search for a certain favorite character, I get more than a little annoyed at her appearance.
Marine Sandwich. I freakin' hate Marine Sandwich.
Granted, it's a little unfair, given that it's born out of my annoyance of anyone who brings her up insisting that she's Cheese Sandwich's sister (yes, I had one of these people pop up on one of my DeviantArt pieces). Aside from a little bias toward my own OC sibling for Cheese, what irritates me about this is that I looked up Marine, studied her, and tried to see if there was anything that could possibly connect these two ponies other than sharing the name "Sandwich".
You know what? I found nothing. Granted, it's most likely because that Friends Forever comic was written before Pinkie Pride, so the author had no clue that Cheese Sandwich was going to be a thing, but outside of those meta reasons, there's nothing in-universe.
If anything, the evidence I found suggests that it's highly unlikely that they're siblings--we all know that Cheese is from Manehattan, and in her comic, Marine is explicitly stated to be from some faraway place called Gallopvania (I mean, there was a contestant from Manehattan in that comic, so I'm guessing Gallopvania's really far away). Ponies do move, I'll give you that, but chances are slim that the Sandwich family would move that far away, especially with a son that's travelling all over Equestria (that would be a jerk move). And if they were a military or diplomat family, you'd think there'd be a bit more fanfare over Cheese taking off.
So if they are related, it's most likely a distant relationship. Even so, does "Sandwich" automatically mean that they're related? So, does that mean Pinkie Pie is related to Peachy Pie? Or that Sweetie Belle and Sugar Belle are related? The only reason I gave Tomato the "Sandwich" name is because it's easier for me to say "Sandwich Brothers" than "Cheese Sandwich and Tomato Soup".
Another thing that gets on my nerves is how those who accept that headcanon play up the mental breakdown Marine had in her comic to make it into some crippling mental illness, to apparently justify Cheese running away from home so he can get away from his 'crazy sister'. Honestly, that just feels like cheap, lazy writing just to get some easy drama and to give Cheese a "deeper" reason to run away besides just being painfully shy.
Stuff like this is why I consider the comics 'selective canon'. I wholeheartedly accept Ponyacci and the existence of cities like Salt Lick City (sans the stupid giant ball of yarn), Seaddle, and Applewood. Marine Sandwich? Even if I did accept her existence (sorry, but she's just a lousy character), there's no way I'm having her being Cheese's sister.
Tomato's a better sibling for Cheese, anyway.
Given your fantastic efforts at creating detailed, extended family trees for the Sandwich family, I'm surprised you never made her like a distant cousin of some sort.
I never took it that they were necessarily related. The comic in question isn't all that good. So I just ignore it, mostly. In fact, I'd forgotten it until you brought it up.
