Creepy Sites #1: Insecam

Insecam is a site where people find security cameras, CCTVs, other surveillance type cameras, and sometimes even webcams that are not password protected and add links to places you can watch the footage of those cameras on the site.

What is fascinating about this site is that uploading the link to the footage as well as watching it is not illegal. The reason for this is because the people uploading the footage didn't hack into the cameras. They simply stumbled upon the open broadcasts. So it isn't illegal from that end. It isn't illegal to watch the footage because, well, the people viewing the footage had no hand in retrieving the the camera access information. They are just viewing it. So it is not illegal for them either.

Browsing through Insacam you find all sorts of videos; people walking in and out of bars, people sleeping in their apartments, videos of national parks, and even videos of animal enclosures. All of these are being viewed by thousands of people without the knowledge of the people who own the cameras. Which is pretty terrifying when you think about it.

This means that at any moment of any day, someone could be watching YOU. They could be watching you from the many cameras pointed towards beaches across the world. They could be watching you from the many cameras pointed onto neighborhood streets or inside of public buildings. And they could even be watching you from inside of your own home.

Let this be a lesson for anyone who has a security camera...or really any kind of camera...in their homes. Make sure it is password protected. If you don't, you might just become the next favorite reality television show of shome creepy viewer from a random place in the wrold.

If you dare to tread on the website and see some of this footage for yourself, here is the link: http://www.insecam.org/

On a lighter note, Insecam does have some pretty interesting footage on it when it comes to watching national parks, animals, or nature-related things. If you are using Insecam to see cool nature stuff, or even just doing some casual city watching (like viewing city skylines and stuff) I really see no harm in it.

But watching people sleep and live their lives day by day is a little weird. Try not to go down the slippery slope of watching people go about their daily routine in their homes. :L

Oh my god, that's scary, people need privacy. At least... some people need privacy.

4647808 It is pretty scary that pretty much anyone (even people who aren't very tech savvy) can have access to pretty much any kind of camera. If they don't gain access to the cameras themselves, they can always view the footage on a site like Insecam. In the hands of normal people, this kind of technology is relatively harmless. But you have to remember that not everyone has the same intentions. Some people could use sites like Insecam to stalk the people who show up in the footage or worse.

This is why certain gaming system peripherals, that have 24/7 cameras, is a bad thing.

4647812 Anything with a camera can potentially be viewed by anyone online, if it is not password protected. Video game cameras are interesting though because a lot of people don't think about password protecting them. But they are just as vulnerable to having people view footage through them as any other kind of live recording device.

Oh boy, I remember reading about this somewhere else online. Im really interested in creepy stuff so its cool if this is gonna become a thing for you. Are you gonna go over the Deep Web? That place is something else entirely.

4647879 I've been on the Deep Web, actually. It isn't as creepy as people make it out to be, although you never want to find yourself on the Dark Web, which is an extension of that. <_< I might to some blog entries about the weirder stuff you can find on the dark web one of these days. :)

Yeah, there is a youtuber I watch who has a series where he browses the Deep Web. Some of it is creepy but others are just funny and interesting. The Dark Web is something Im interested in seeing.

4647884 I am definitely going to make some blogs about it at some point since it is something I am very interested in, myself. Thank you for the suggestion. XD

4647892
Yes, please continue this creepy website series. Will 4chan be on here? XD. Just joking lol.

4647893 Well, I could put the creepy posts found on 4Chan and Reddit. There are quite a few of those, actually. Like the one person who posted a picture of a dead body on 4Chan and ended up being the killer.

4647898
Oh yes, I remember that story actually. Also I remember a story where someone tried to film their suicide on 4chan by burning down his apartment room and luckily he was saved just in time.

4647903 There have been a lot of suicides and murders live streamed on Facebook and other social media sites, unfortunately. It is very sad. :(

4647904
I know, another sad thing about that 4chan suicide stream is that many were cheering for his death and treated it like it was some kinda sports game. It just shows how fucked up that site can be.

4647910 Similar things have happened with the other social media streams. What I don't understand is why no one thought to call the police in any of these instances. :(

4647930 Very tragic situations, all around. :(

So you've been watching the "China Uncensored" videos I've been posting?

Cool.

4648065 I have been watching some. I find them to be very interesting. :)

4648394 You are very welcome. Thank you for sharing them. :)
