Overpriced Writing Advice
Where you can learn the stuff I paid thousands of dollars to have taught to me, for free.
...Or In This Case, I Share The Free Stuff I Find - Pt. 3
(AKA "Blog share: Character = Theme, and The Dangers of Bathos")
Hi, guys. Long time no see. Rather than drop a ton of apologies and explanations, how about I share with you some cool video essays I found about writing? The first video touches on something I've covered in this series before, and that's the idea that "plot + character = theme." The second video dives into the success of Wonder Woman, and how it deliberately sought to break away from a growing trend where creators and storytellers fall into the trap of bathos.
True Detective vs. Se7en — Creating Light Amongst The Dark
from the YouTube channel, Lessons from the Screenplay.
I absolutely love this comparison of these two stories, and this essay just further reinforces that storytelling is pretty universal no matter the format (and for us fanfic writers, the medium!)
What Writers Should Learn From Wonder Woman
from the YouTube channel, Just Write.
I enjoyed Wonder Woman a lot, more than I thought I would. What felt refreshing about it was after quite a few Marvel films practically bursting with witty exchanges and one-liners, we had a movie that felt completely sincere. As writers, yes even fanfic writers, I think we have to ask ourselves what our jokes are doing to the overall meaning of our stories. Are we writing satires or parodies? Or are we just feeling insecure about people labeling our attempts at sincerity as cheesy/lame?
If you liked these videos, I also encourage you guys to also check out the Nerdwriter. His YouTube channel is pretty brilliant, and I've really found his analysis of films, music, and just about anything that has to do with words very rewarding.
