My thoughts on the redesigned Princess Luna · 6:27pm Oct 22nd, 2011
I just saw Luna Eclipsed and like a lot of people, I was eager to see how well her redesign works in the show and what personality the writers gave her. First, let me comment on her redesign. The artists certainly made a few changes to her appearance. Her color looks darker and she now has wavy hair like Celestia. I have to admit, seeing her new design is going to take some time getting used to because I'm so used to seeing her old design in fan art. Still, I do like the changes both to her appearance and personality. After all, Luna hasn't been seen since the pilot episode, and in a pilot episode, changes to art direction and character is inevitable (in fact, I'm quite surprised at just how little has changed since the pilot). So for that, I do appreciate the changes to Luna's design because it's quite fetching and it makes Luna look more like Celestia's sister.
As for Luna's personality, I'll admit that it took a little while for me to get used to it, but I really got into her new personality by the end of the episode. Her formal and threatening demeanor is a great contrast with Celestia's inviting and casual demeanor. Most fans wanted Luna to be insecure and antisocial. Others wanted her to be a prankster. In this episode, the writers were able to inject a little of those qualities into Luna, and it works.
Part of the reason why I wanted to see Luna's character explored is because she seemed like such an interesting character. She had been gone for a millennium and naturally she would have to adjust to her new environment just like how her subjects would have to adjust to her. Naturally, the first episode to star her explored that idea very well. So far, the second season is off with some really good episodes and I can't wait to see more.
