What level of ‘Dark And Troubled Past’ would be acceptable for background ponies.
I plan on giving a few of them...uneasy upbringings but they’re incidents that are well behind them and has been greatly improved by their time in Ponyville and the friends they’ve made.
But I don’t want to go too far.

I guess I feel the device is overused at this point in fan fiction. I play it for laughs with Button Mash's mom as a ninja whose a rival of Bon Bon's whose job it was to oppose naughty media in Equestria.

Well, the thing is, what I’ve got so far is that Balisong knows about Trixie, Caramel, Berry Punch and Cherry Berry’s past from their time spying on Ponyville for so many years.
I’ve based Trixie’s troubled past off several famous fanfics (Including Getting Back On Your Hooves) but she’s not an ordinary background pony so fantasising her past is acceptable. Everyone does that.
But Caramel, Berry Punch and Cherry Berry, normal background ponies, I don’t want to go over the top.
What I’ve got planned is...
Caramel grew up with alcoholic parents who ended up giving their cousin, Dr Stable Horse, custody over their son after an ‘incident’ with the colt and their drinking-friends (Hinting at physical assault or worse)
Berry Punch (And, by extension, Cheerilee) developed drinking problems after their father was sent to prison for killing their mother who beat them.
And Cherry Berry’s millionaire parents disowned her after an incident (And she’s seen in a photo visiting a hospital that used to be, in Balisong’s words, a ‘Very Special Clinic’)
This is all in their past and the scars have faded over time spent with their friends in Ponyville (Magic Of Friendship, say it with me now) and the whole thing might be a bit ambiguous as Balisong has, by now, shown herself to be a massive troll who could well be lying out her front teeth.
Anything could have happened.
But I’m just trying to avoid jumping the line between edgy but optimistic and just plain gloomy.
