Happy 6th of June!
(Basically Swedish 4th of July)
6th of June is the Swedish national holiday. It was established in 1983, and became a national holiday (meaning everyone has the right to the day off the same way they do on christmas day or easter) in 2005.
6th of June was oartly chosen because one of our most historical kings, Gustav Vasa, was crowned King on the 6th og june 1523. It was he who made Sweden it's own country by breaking out of the Kalmar Union, which made Sweden a part of a union with Denmark. This man also irdered the making of the first ever swedish translation of the bibel, which was called 'Gustav Vasa's bibel' in 1548. It was used until the next major translation was published 1917. Besides this there are also several other reasons.
Most importantly though, is to remember: It is NOT marking the winning of a war, and it is NOT marking any kind of Independence day. Thank you.
What you do on 6th of june depends, but most people eat some cake with wipped cream and strawberries, put up their flag, and join a local celebration.
This year, I did the last 2. At my local celebration, I not only performed with my acting group and got some gifts for doing volonteer work with local Scout Troop (I help take care if younger kids), but I also saw the oldest princess (since Sweden is a monarchy) holding a speech while visiting our city! It was amazing and I was just a littke star struck became I love our royal family
Yup
Happy 6th of June! to you too!
Hope you enjoy the day to the fullest.
