[Pokemon Analysis] "An Ultra Announcement" · 5:19pm Jun 6th, 2017

So, Pokemon Direct happened and revealed that the newest Pokemon games are Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. A giant, I'm talking MASSIVE crack between the Pokemon fandom happened which split the fans between wanting a Diamond and Pearl remake and wanting something more from Sun and Moon. I see myself in the middle of that crack: while I myself do indeed still want a DP remake, I'm also really excited for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon!

Because to me it doesn't matter what games are announced as long as I'm able to spam Cross Poison with my Crobat, may that spamming be in Sinnoh or in Alola.

But I digress! I come to you not to spam my opinions down your throats rather to describe my thoughts on the new trailer. First I'd like to make quick mention of Pokken Tournament and the Gold and Silver ports to the 3DS. I've never played Pokken so I'm indifferent to it, but I'm actually looking forward to playing some of the older games that aren't HGSS.

Here's the trailer for those curious:

A Brand-New Alola to Explore!

Before we begin, I want to make it clear that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are NOT sequels to Sun and Moon. If they are, I'll make sure I'm the first person to correct my mistake. But Masuda explicitly said that USUM are alternate stories to Sun and Moon, meaning USUM are actually the very first dual sister games (B2W2 don't count because they're sequels, not sister games).

The very first thing anyone would see right off the bat is that Alola looks a little different, all according to plan as sister games usually change a few things up a bit. The very first thing we see is our new trainers have different starting outfits and hairstyles, probably to make up for Sun and Moon's unfortunate character customization options. More customization is always welcomed, of course. We then see an updated Route 1 which has more detail and color added to it. This gives us the impression that things are much different than when we last set foot in Alola.

A thing not in the trailer I showed you was the new Pikachu house designed to look like a Pikachu with dozens of Pikachu surrounding it for one reason or another. It looks cute and I don't know what impact it'll have on the game, but it's an interesting addition nonetheless.

We then see a field of Pikachu and a very angry-looking Togedemaru, followed by a Mimikyu attacking and a daytime Lycanroc jumping up into the air. While I have no idea why these Pokemon are angry or why they're attacking, my GUESS is that these are either new Totem Pokemon boss battles or some kind of Totem Pokemon mini-bosses. We'll never know until more information on Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is revealed, unfortunately.

And then... THEY appear.

Pokemon x Digimon?

Canonical Pokemon fusion is nothing new; just ask White Kyurem and Black Kyurem. However, this is the first time the third legendary Pokemon is fusing with the original duo and not the other way around. It seems these new forms of Solgaleo and Lunala are truly something to behold. And like them or not, there is a ton to talk and theorize about.

If the new forms are anything to go by, the very first thing fans of Sun and Moon would see right from the get-go is the new armor on Solgaleo and Lunala looks very familiar. If you haven't figured it out by now, that armor looks one hell of a lot like Necrozma. The armors make both legendary Pokemon seem a lot more evil than they probably are. I mean Lunala straight-up looks like some kind of evil overlord and I love her for it.

Here's a theory, not my opinion but a theory others can expand on if necessary: Necrozma looks like an Ultra Beast because it isn't an Ultra Beast itself, rather it's personified armor for Solgaleo and Lunala. This could totally be wrong but from what we got from the trailers even if it doesn't turn out to be truly armor, we can still see that Necrozma is the secondary component for the fusion as either Solgaleo or Lunala are the brains of the operation. It would also explain why Necrozma beats itself up in its idle animation; it's physical form probably hurts it.

Think of it like an edgier version of Ghirahim, though instead of being a weapon it's actually armor for something else.

And can we just talk about how COOL Solgaleo and Lunala look? Solgaleo straight-up has wings now and Lunala's new arms make it look like it was also fused with Gore Magala DNA! How awesome is that?!

I'd also like to make special mention of the picture of a new Gladion that was leaked just a few hours before the announcement of Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. I posted it before, but now that we have some ground to stand on I'd like to go over it again.

I have absolutely no idea if this picture is real or fake or whatever. However, last time I didn't show you the second picture that was revealed alongside the first one. I didn't show it because I imagined it irrelevant to what I was talking about, but now that we have some news on USUM I want to make something clear.

While I can't confirm that the first picture is fake as we just don't have enough information on Gladion in these new games quite yet, I can confirm 100% that the second picture is absolutely fake. Look at what console the picture is one, yeah? It's the Switch! However, GameFreak later confirmed that any rumors that USUM would have a port on the Switch are false, meaning the second picture is a definite fake. This doesn't mean the first picture is false, however. We'll simply have to wait and see what happens.

That's all for now! If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask them in the comments below! Until then, this is SuperKamek signing off and hopefully preparing for more USUM news later this year. Bye!

why say sister games why not say brother games

Before we begin, I want to make it clear that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are NOT sequels to Sun and Moon. If they are, I'll make sure I'm the first person to correct my mistake. But Masuda explicitly said that USUM are alternate stories to Sun and Moon, meaning USUM are actually the very first dual sister games (B2W2 don't count because they're sequels, not sister games).

Actually they were pretty vague in that part. The english translation said it's an alternate story in the SM world, which leaves it open if it's sequel or AU.
The german translation was more specific, as it said it's "a different adventure in the same world" (translated), which to me sounds more like sequel.

Honestly, kinda excited, kinda miffed.

Excited, because Sun and Moon MADE ME LOVE POKEMON AGAIN. So this is a huge chance for Ninty to rake some cash in from me, and keep the 3DS alive for a while.

On the other hand...Come on, Nintendo. We all know the Switch is gonna replace the 3DS eventually. And being 100% NO OFFENSE INTENDED HONEST. Pokemon is a bigger seller/household name then Mario or Zelda. A mainline Pokemon game on Switch would end any doubts about the Switch.

Still, excited for this, and will probably pick it up ^_^

In military talk, objects, more specifically ships and aircraft, are given female pronouns. So a ship with a similar model of a previous ship but with slight differences is called a "sister" ship. The name just stuck with other things outside the military.

Besides, "sister game" is just the universally accepted term for third games in a Pokémon generation collection.

4561864
Like I said, if these games turn out to be sequels I'll be the first to correct myself. However, seeing how the games aren't called Sun 2 and Moon 2 and seeing how Masuda never said "sequel", we can assume, at least for now, that these are sister games.

4561888
it feels like it's sexist but i digress

4561876
Agreed. Not entirely sure why GameFreak didn't put the game on both the 3DS and Switch, but the game looks to be fun nonetheless! I'd pick it up no matter what it was since I'm just that big of a Pokémon fan.

And Lunala looks badass, so no complaints here.

4561898
I appreciate the concern, but I didn't make the terms back in the day. That's pretty much how it's always been.

So this is more the platinum of Diamond and pearl then it is the black and white 2 of black and white. Is that correct?

Pretty sure no one is surprised that I'm more excited for Gold/Silver than Ultra Moon. At least for now. I shall withhold judgement until I have more info.

Considering Monster Hunter XX is playable on both systems, I’m surprised too. I mean, come on. Monster Hunter AND Pokemon on Switch? Nintendo would win the year, no question. Even with Microsoft’s CEO Promising a quality E3, and insider reports saying Sony’s got some real high quality surprises to announce.

4561996
Correct! B2W2 were sequels, but these games are sister games like Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum. It's the first time there has been two sister games. So the theory goes; if they turn out to be sequels, I'll correct myself.

4562001
Well of course, you old man. :rainbowlaugh: But I still love Crystal, so I'm not complaining.

4562669
Back in my day, kids respected their elders.:rainbowlaugh: But in all seriousness, I have to wonder if they’ll bring Crystal to the Eshop. They did Yellow, so why not.

4562697
They might bring Crystal, who knows? I'd get that over Gold and Silver, of course.

Sooooo... Is this like a Yellow, Crystal, Emerald special DD-luxe+ take on Sun and Moon...?

4562698
I hope so. It’ll be nice to be able to play it in the dark without a flashlight. Of course, that’s old gamer problems, so you probably wouldn’t know about it.:raritywink::rainbowwild:

4562700
That's what the trailers are leaning towards. They could be sequels, but they look more like sister games to me.

4562668
I hope they're sequels, also have you seen the double cross gameplay on the switch? I don't have a switch but this is convincing.

4562702
BOYO I'M YOUNG NOT UNCULTURED!! :flutterrage:

LOL, JK though. :rainbowlaugh: I own a GameBoy Color, dude. I have Pokemon Red and a few other games, dude. I know what it's like to play in the dark and it's infuriating.

Dude.

4562709
Neither do I, and no I haven't I've only seen footage on the 3DS. I'll check it out when I'm not tired as balls from work, y'know?

4562711
Not to mention always playing Russian Roulette with the batteries every time you turn it on. You have no idea how many times I rage quit because the batteries cost me hours of unsaved work. Dude.

Does anybody know how can we pre-book the ultra version. Please let me know the details.
It is in my new wishlist for the Pokemon Sun and Moon Ultra version. I am so desperately waiting for it. My brother had a set of all the Pokemon and dark soul series with him, he bought from this source over discounted price in the pocket budget. Hopefully this new ultra version will also be great to play as earlier ones.

Yeah, try last month. It's too late now, but to you could have easily gone over to your local GameStop and pre-ordered the game, simple as that. Or alternatively, something you can still do, you can download the games directly from the e-shop onto your 3DS.

Also, are you copy-pasting on other peoples' comment sections to get an answer? I mean, that's not really all that cool, dawg. I answered your question this time, but maybe it would be better if you didn't do that in the future. Or at least ask in PMs, to like one or two people.
