Episode Review - S7E9 Honest Apple · 4:32pm May 14th, 2017
I think one of the new writers found a folder labeled "Rejected Season 2 Scripts" on a colleague's computer and peeked in.
So the premise of this episode is simple - Rarity is hosting a fashion show, and she wants Applejack to be the judge. The problems with the episode should be self-evident from there.
It was cool to see Photo Finish and Hoity Toity again. And we got some fun moments, I loved Rarity on the guitar and Applejack meeting Strawberry Sundae and her horror at how she doesn't like apples. But the problem, from the getgo, is the idiocy of Rarity recruiting Applejack to judge a fashion show. Not only does Applejack know nothing about fashion but she's made her disdrain for it vocally known several times. So why would Rarity think she'd be a good judge? Because she's "honest." Uh-huh.
To the show's credit it tried to handle it well by showing Applejack getting a bit full of herself and proudly proclaiming her unfiltered opinion to the point she was being a jerk. But it should still come off as no surprise to anyone who's watched any episode featuring Applejack and Rarity before that Applejack's opinion clashes with the other judges, horrifying them and embarassing Rarity. Applejack learns to try and cushion the brutal honesty in the future.
Episode was fine. Not as terrible as I expected going in, and it did have a few cute bits here and there, but again, there's no surprises for anyone with how this episode unfolds. I think the writer added Pinkie here just to add levity because without her the episode had pretty much no real humor.
Doesn't she? The Cutie Mark Chronicles and Simple Ways suggest that she does. You are correct that she disdains fashion most of the time though.
This episode was a disaster. 2/10, worst of the season. Also, recycling the moral of "28 Pranks Later" this soon? Lazy.
Episode was men. It was fun seeing AJ rag on clothes and to see Rocker Rarity so hey take the good with the bad I guess.
