State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Fic recs, April 6th! · 1:43pm Apr 6th, 2017

My hard drive has been fixed. I can now access all my old fanfic-related documents, etc. Now comes the hard part. D: Stay tuned.

Fallout Equestria: Monsters by Gamma Deekay
Reading by Plagen Shiki
He's got good volume and delivery, but this reading was full of unexpected pauses and false starts. If he puts some editing into his work, he'll be a good choice, so I think I'll come back to him later. (The reading's from a couple years ago, anyway, so it's probably fine. Also, he finished an audiobook of Project Horizons literally two weeks ago, beating VisualPony by about three months! :O)
Genre: Grimdark
A young stallion learns the value of friendship just in time to lose it.
I'm not honestly sure who'll want to read this. The FoE tag will scare a lot of folks away, though all you really need to know to understand the setting is that Equestria is fighting a war against zebras. Fans of military drama might appreciate the story of building camaraderie by soldiers serving together, but then I'm also not sure how realistic a portrayal of a military this is. Then there's Deadbolt Tumbler, our protagonist, who, as a character, is very ehhhh. He's mute, and also doesn't feel emotion. I'm not sure why that was considered a good character trait, especially since it doesn't really have any bearing on the story. Speaking of, story is what earns this the grimdark tag; I haven't even seen the atrocities depicted here in major FoE fics! In the end, I'm not quite sure what the point was. It may have been making a statement about war, but that gets lost for being both too simplistic and too dramatic.

Party of Two by scoots2
Reading by Keyframe and Djsmell
Reading by VisualPony
Genre: Shipping
Hearts and Hooves Day is meant to be spent with your special somepony, not a crowd.
I don't actually know why I'm reading this one; possibly just because it's the only one of Keyframe's readings I hadn't already read. <.< Point being, I don't ship this. At all. Yet I found myself appreciating the setup, if I imagined Cheese was literally anyone else. Granted, I also feel like I've seen "Pinkie treats a date like a party except she knew it was a date along" before. Points for "rubber chickened out", which are revoked for messing up the name of Quills and Sofas. >:B

Capes, Constellations and Carriage Wheels by Royal Noir
Reading by Goombasa
Genre: Shipping
Starlight Glimmer and Trixie enjoy a night out under the stars, and a change.
Now we're talking. :D This is one of those stories whose premise I see on Tumblr a lot: short, fluffy one-shots more in love with the concept of love, designed to be as adorable as possible. At least this is up-front about the fluff, so you'll more or less immediately know if you'll like it. If I had a complaint, it's that it goes on a tad long; I mean, it's obvious why Trixie is so nervous, and I'm just wanting her to get on with it, then it happens, then it kind of luxuriates in its own cuteness. As I said, the kind of story you'll know beforehand whether or not you'll like.

Equestria Falls No More: Kamen Rider Jam, Champion of Equestria by KR Chrome
Genre: Fall of Equestria Fixfic/Kamen Rider Crossover
I saw this in the popular box, and my interest was immediately garrotted and roped to a moving train. Fall of Equestria AND Kamen Rider? It's the best worst idea ever! It ended up being better than I expected, yet precisely what I expected. I mean, it's an FOE fixfic; Scarlet Weather has written about the sins thereof, and this slots neatly into that evaluation. But, if one ignores the pat, telly opening that sums up the events of FOE, it's actually decently written. I mean, it's better than I expected, at least. It's also about as unapproachable as every other KR crossover I've read. Jam is from Kamen Rider Gaim, aka "The Fruit One", which is why I don't know anything about him, and it doesn't help that this is apparently a different version of the character from another of the author's fanfics. But this is completely ridiculous, in a good way, and if you still need caribou-directed catharsis, it may be worth the bizarreness.

You've Got Spam! by CoffeeMinion and Georg
Genre: Comedy
On her second day in Ponyville, Twilight enters a nightmare of postal errors and regulations.
This fic, I don't even. XD It's a laugh through and through, whether it's about S1 Twilight being tightly-wound, the joys of spam mail translated to an Equestrian setting, or ridiculous bureaucratic regulations. That said, it did feel a tad unfocused, bouncing around as much as it does. But if you're interested in a look back into the past with some solid comedy, look no further!

Huh hard drive fixed? Does that mean you can catch up to food reviews, too? :pinkiehappy:

I'm shocked. I'm used to HDD failures being pretty permanent.

In future, spend that money on SSDs. HDDs may be initially cheaper, but unless you're willing to get several in RAID you're flirting with disaster. Just too many moving parts.

Scoots2 is actually the author who got me to ship CheesePie in the first place. So you know who to blame. :derpytongue2:

The dastard :|

Everytime! Everytime I hear people talking about FoE I think they're actually talking about Fallout Equestria and I'm like "why are yall being so hard on fallout equestria? its not that bad!"

Woohoo! Thanks for the R!

I should note that Georg co-wrote Spam. Not only was he a delight to work with, but he also wrote the funniest material in it. Like the sock thing was all him. :rainbowlaugh:

That's why I use "FoE" to refer to Fallout, and "FOE" to refer to Fall of. A minor contrast, but important. :B

Yes, actually! I still have to put together the case I bought the components for last year, reinstall Windows, and then portion out the 5 or 6 thousand files I've collected over the last year and a half, but now I can do these things.
