    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Things that go bump (something something) · 2:44am Mar 22nd, 2017

Okay guys, if you haven't checked out Heavy Rock yet, Run! Don't Walk! :derpytongue2:

These guys read it AND LOOK WERHE THEY AER NOW

No, seriously, I'm not too proud to ask y'all to take a look at it. It's quirky but it's 100% serious (except for the funny bits). The upvote ratio is good. We've even had some banter going in the comments. The main thing it needs now is eyes on it. :raritydespair:

I've actually discovered an issue that's working against me on that. Since I only update To Serve In Hell monthly, I'm accustomed to new chapters bumping it to the top of the main page's update list right away. I figured I could use that to get three bumps for Heavy Rock with the three chapters I released today.

Lo and behold, only the first one resulted in a bump. :applejackconfused:

I imagine the issue is that FimFiction has some kind of limiter in place to prevent update spam/abuse. It's probably for the best, though it kinda bites in this case. I'm debating if I should go down to releasing 1 chapter per day because of that... though the next one is the shortest in the story, and I don't want to leave people hanging.

Do any of you guys know how that actually works under the hood? Is it like a 24 hour cooldown on chapter releases to get that bump, or something else?

Yeah. The site usually only allows like 1 every 18 to 24 hours to be shown that you're updating. I would just do one everyday if you want more views.

4467122 Aha, thanks for the confirmation. I guess that argues for updating once per day. I'd like to say I don't care about the views, but I do. This has been a long-brewing passion project and I'd like to give it the best chance I can.

4467176 I totally understand. You want more people to enjoy it, don't you? That's what any writer wants.

I watched the video with those guys when it first came out... back in college...

Well, thanks for that buck to the brain. :derpyderp1:
And yeah, it's one per day to prevent peeps from doing the story equivalent of thread necromancy.
