NINTENDO SWITCH WARNING #1

As reviewers receive and playtest their Nintendo Switch launch systems, problems have been reported. Here are two known problems so far:

Switch's internal storage is a joke relative to game data size

Oh, and the Joycons are losing sync with the system.

32 gigabytes? I've seen a flashdrive with more capacity than that.

:twilightoops: "Do all alicorns have these? I think I need to rethink my new life."

As these two individuals so often told us once upon a time:

"Don't be a dummy, buckle your safety belt!"

4435663 I own TWO flashdrives bigger than that. I keep my porn on one of them. (And my stories. But mostly my porn.)

As we make our descent into Canterlot, please return to your seats, fasten your safety belts and return your tray tables to the upright position. Thank you for flying Air Twilight.

The Switch uses cartridges rather than optical media; the speed at which data can be read from a cartridge is significantly faster than a 4x Blu-Ray disc, so it may not be necessary to load games onto internal storage except for digitals. The digital sizes can be offset very easily since the Switch can use SDXC cards up to 2 TB.

All that said, a 256 GB SDXC card from what I would consider a reliable manufacturer is around $100. For what the Switch will cost, and for the amount of internal storage it has, it had better NVMe and not some other kind of flash memory.

As for the Joy-Cons, there is no modern console released that doesn't have issues: You may recall the Playstation 3 had similar issue when it was released. What really matters is whether or not this will be fixed with the day 1 patch that we know will be released (although the fact that it doesn't seem to be happening consistently would seem to indicate a manufacturing issue with the left Joy-Con rather than a firmware issue, which an update patch would probably not fix). We'll just have to see how things actually shake out.

Day One console buyers = large scale beta testers. :coolphoto:

its...saddening how small the storage is for the switch. and yet like a moth (not you Mythril) to a flame, i want it so badly, ecept for the fact that ITS SOLD OUT!

4435679
Oh, they do that deliberately. Keeps the price up.

4435684 im well aware. i worked at target back when the the NES Mini was new. we got like, 2-3 every other week. this isnt new to me.

what is new that *AMAZON* of all places is sold out. i've almost always been able to turn to amazon for some things, but this is a first for me. in anycase, its still good for me, i can at least knock some bills out early before getting a Switch.

With Iwata dead and Miyamoto getting so old, the two main people who kept Nintendo on the straight-n-narrow are gone. Honestly, I would prefer if they switched, (no pun intended), entirely to software, just like Sega, but without the failure.

This isn't what Twilight meant when she asked Spike if he would ride her.

I can't remember which episode/movie that's from. Is it EQG1?

This looks incredibly unpleasant for Twilight.

Now for the question everyone's thinking about asking: where does the seatbelt attach?

4435738 It's from the Season 4 finale.

I think.

Could be wrong.

The Spike safety rule: as long as you've got one leg buckled down, you're good.

you can easily get bigger cards to plug in and i personally will pretty much be using it like i have my 3ds since my tv serves as my monitor so neither of these affect me.

:twilightoops:: Uh, Spike, why do you have that seatbelt?
:moustache:: What? I gotta be prepared just in case I run into MORE Nintendo Switch problems.

"Spike, that's your seat belt. It won't do anything if it isn't attached to me."
"Where's yours?"
"... Never mind."

4435672 Looks to me like Nintendo knows their online services just suck and would prefer you have a physical copy of the game in the first place. Get a good SD card and it goes up to 2TB. For me this isn't really a problem as I prefer physical copies of stuff anyway.

Now the Joycon having sync issues is a problem. Since I'm broke, I'm not getting a Switch for a long while anyway (would rather pay bills), but this is just incentive to wait until the next shipment comes out with that fixed.

4435677 You're missing the point: the memory issue actively discourages digital purchases of games and hurts the publishers whose profits will tank when physical media sales drop in price/who rely on digital content "flash sales" to draw in impulse buyers. In today's market where people are more likely to purchase digital downloads than physical media for most games, this is a poor choice on Nintendo's part, and shows that they STILL have not learned anything about the competitive download market.

4435893 Yeah, I'm unlikely to get one until 2018 myself unless I hit a windfall later this year.

Twilight never felt the same after she had those implants...seat belt implants. Now where will Spikey boy put the horn, on her head?:rainbowkiss:

TBH I'm a Nintendo Character, I'll stick with them through almost any rings of fire I have to jump through

"When fastening your seatbelt, make sure to insert the clip into the buckle until you hear a click, then make sure to pull on the strap to tighten the belt if necessary."

As for the storage, this is old news for me. Most people probably have an SD card somewhere which they can use for their console. As for me, I always tend to buy physical cause it means not having to wait for said game to download plus I'm not always hooked to WiFi.

I was really hoping hoping I didn't have to run a patch before playing cause I REALLY want to get into Zelda ASAP. :fluttershyouch:

Folks, you'll notice that the captain has turned on the seatbelt sign. Please return to your seat and buckle up. If you have any small children, please secure your seatbelt before helping them with their's.

I think the biggest problem to worry about the switch (besides the launch issues will likely get patched and the poor system storage capacity) is Nintendo is now joining the "Pay to play online" crowd. Why would I pay money to play online when a PC will let me do that for free and services like Steam can easily provide access to all the games I could want? People aren't going to pay extra money just to use online services, it's like locking away content on the disc to sell as DLC, it's just trying to extort more money from players, money they may not want to spend.

4435994 Yeah, I'm in agreement there. It's a bad business model because it annoys consumers.

4435996 It's especially insulting because Nintendo for better or for worse has always been one to set trends and go their own way, not copy what others are doing.

Zef

"Wait... since when do I have seatbelts? And... do I have overhead oxygen masks in case of emergency?

"Oh no! There's turbulence up ahead and I don't have any barf bags!"

Ri2

4435998 I am uneasy about the Switch as well.
But if I don't get it, how will I play the awesome upcoming games?!

4436070 Well, it does have some good games lined up for it at the start, including Breath of The Wild, Super Mario Odyessy ( a return to the gameplay style of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine from the looks of things, an open hubworld to explore from which you can access stages), an improved port of Mario Kart 8 (including a return of the original battle mode that was removed), Splatoon 2, and a few third party titles. But time will tell if the console library will be able to overcome the console limitations, it seems that once again Nintendo is pushing out an underpowered console and trying to use some new gameplay gimmicks to make up for it.

4435996 Nintendo has never had a good online service. "Oh, your downloaded a game and the file was corrupted? Better pay again instead of re-downloading from a library hooked to your account!"

See that is the worst. For once, Nintendo is the farthest behind in online service. I blame being an Old Boys Club and not bringing a younger exec into meetings

Ri2

4436074 I wish they'd stop that.

I have to get one eventually, no doubt, but I just canceled some preorders. I can wait for a price drop, because the Wii U ain't half bad. :pinkiehappy:

I have everything I want, I'm not gonna beg for perfection from idiots.

4436074 Being amphibious is a pretty damn good gimmick, in all fairness. The Joycon shit absolutely nobody will ever use beyond the launch demonstration titles notwithstanding, you gotta admit it'll be nice to take full-HD console gaming on the go, memory/storage issues notwithstanding. I'm still looking forward to the Switch and a LOT of its games. I just wish Nintendo was better at learning from their mistakes.

4436076 Yeah, Nintendo is...NOT the company of choice for the always-on age. >.>;;

4436167 Yeah, I'm in no hurry. I've still got P5, KH1.5+2.5, FF12 Zodiac Age, and a hard drive upgrade for my PS4 to deal with before I can even THINK about the Switch. Oh, and a new phone (which I'm ordering next week).

4436179 Around 200 years specifically in the gaming industry, not a surprise it's hard to get them to advance socially. Japan in general has this problem, but it might be in the next couple of decades things change, if what I have heard is evidence.

:moustache: "I'm glad this new model of the Alicorn comes with a seatbelt: I don't know what I was thinking picking the Lunar model."

Nintendo, get it together with your products.:facehoof: I like a lot of your products, but some of them need more time in development.

4438260 Possibly, but I wouldn't bank on it.
