Magnetic Videography - Viacom International · 3:42pm Jan 18th, 2017

In 1978, a red FBI Warning was added to the start of the tapes. It would carry over to subsequent Fox Video labels. Some back covers listed the newly-released titles from Viacom (Spring 1978) and/or the estate of Charles Chaplin (Summer 1978), others listed those plus some more Viacom titles and the first 15 from Avco-Embassy (Fall 1978A), and others listed everything from Hello, Dolly! to The Sound of Music. Around this time, newer pressings of older two-tape films started filling the first tape more.

This part of the videography covers titles Blay licensed from Viacom International. Blay had access to the films of the late Elvis Presley (i.e. those that he did for Paramount; whether Viacom gained the syndication rights after his death or from some other deal prior to that remains unknown to the OP) as well as three of Jerry Lewis' films, and the theatrical Terrytoons cartoons (i.e. the Mighty Mouse inventory). The theatrical Terrytoon cartoons were originally distributed theatrically by 20th Century-Fox; those made for television were produced directly by CBS, who by this time owned the Terrytoons, only to later lose control of them to the fin-syn laws of the early '70s. The distributorship of this inventory are, in this century, the obvious property of Paramount Pictures and CBS.

Early Magnetic releases had a brown bar and a black band reading "Magnetic Video Corporation" at the bottom:

Later ones had the text "MAGNETIC VIDEO - A TWENTIETH CENTURY-FOX COMPANY" in between two red bars at the bottom:

There is also a variation of that label where the "MAGNETIC VIDEO" font is significantly larger; I still have to do a scan of it.

Blay also launched Magnetic Video in West Germany. There was also a company called Magnetic Video in Argentina, but it had no connection with Blay's company.

Viacom titles intially appeared in a sequence beginning at 2001; Magnetic also had a UK-only series of Viacom titles starting at 2901. Releases from Viacom had the Magnetic announcer (at one point sounding different from the usual one) stating: "By special arrangement with Viacom International" and then "Magnetic Video Corporation is proud to offer the following motion picture entertainment on videocassette" (1978-79), "Magnetic Video Corporation is proud to offer the following major motion picture on videocassette" (1979-80), "Magnetic Video Corporation is proud to offer the Greatest Sports Legends on videocassette" (#2011-2016), or "Magnetic Video Corporation is proud to offer the following special video presentation." An additional title in this category, Long Weekend (made in Australia), was released by Magnetic Video South Pacific and no other worldwide division of Magnetic Video.
