Oh yeah. I was an author here once upon a time.
But now a year has passed since Hocus Pocus ended, and I haven't posted even a short story since.
I've been thinking of coming back and getting some writing done again, but I've run into a problem and I need the opinions of a few readers to help me get my thoughts straight.
My plan, some of you may remember, was to release a short story about Nester, the friendly changeling from Hocus Pocus. The partially finished draft is still there, waiting.
The problem is, now we have a CANON friendly changeling in the form of Thorax, and I'm worried a story about Nester would just feel... redundant? Obviously his story and Thorax's are not the same, but I'm concerned that we now have our quintessential friendly changeling in the canon lore, and that would make fanfictions about other friendly changelings kind of flop.
What do you think? Is Nester a lost cause in the face of Thorax? Or should I still try to tell his story?

I'd still like to hear about him. (I'm also not a fan of what they've done
towith the changelings, so another take on things would be great for that reason as well.)Why would it matter? Yes it happened in show, but this is a slightly different version of things, and he was already a part of that 'verse so... don't see how there's be any problems. The two are still two separate Narratives so, yeah I see no reason not to go for it.

There were friendly changeling (stories) before Thorax and there can certainly be friendly changelings after it was made canon.
Canon be dammed. If you have a story you want to tell then do so. Don't let the fact that the show did something similar stop you.
If you don't want to avoid cannon, what about the aftermath of the Throax stuff and how it effected Nester.

Well the fic I have in mind is Nester's backstory, pre-Hocus Pocus. How Nester was affected by the events of Season 6 would be covered in the third main book in the series, if I ever get around to writing it.
Thorax is a dumb name. It'd be like naming a pony Abdomen.
Fanfic has never had a problem skirting if not straight up ignoring canon without complaint. Go ahead and I know I'd want to read it!
There's an AU tag for a reason plus doesn't Derpy's matchmaking job and coltfriend as well as Dinky going to Celestia's school already differ from canon?
Well you don't have to do a story of Nester if you don't want to..... If your interested I'm working on a new series that will be opened to those who are interested....PM if your interested. Also it's good to have you back in action my friend.
There's an easy solution that others have already mentioned. That is to ignore Thorax happened and slap on the Alternate Universe tag. Of course if you are up to the challenge, you could always try to incorporate the two stories together, but using the Alternate Universe tag would be the easiest and simplest solution.
I can't see why Thorax's existence should make Nester "redundant." Nester's role in current events is entirely different, and if you were planning on giving him a backstory, I would presume there would be somewhat more to it than all three sentences of Thorax's (which was fine in the context of the show). Go for it.
And please don't ever fall down the trap of feeling your work is redundant because the show filled in a gap you were using. I've lost too many good writers to that. S&H remains my favourite finished story on the site largely because the few I might have placed above it were smothered in their beds by their own creators. I'm begging you to be better than that; to see that the canon patch job on the plot hole often only covers the surface.
If stories about friendly changelings and their backstory could ever feel redundant this site would have stopped receiving them after the 1000'th story. Even an actual episode just in written form can be new and entertaining, as long as it's well written. And everything you write is really good, so don't worry about it!

Interesting characters are by definition interesting. Please write more Nester. If that's okay with you....
Considering how much of a flop Thorax was, I find it highly unlikely that a writer of your calibre could do worse.

Well actually that's not quite what I'm asking. Nester's story takes place before/during Hocus Pocus, which in turn takes place during Season 3. So the canon events of season 6 will not be tampered with, so it's not really AU.
The question I'm asking is simply "Has everyone already had their fill of friendly changelings now that there's a canon one" but it seems from the comments so far that I shouldn't abandon the idea after all.
4346095 3 episodes I'd need a lot more than that to get sick of them so sure make you're story. Heck you could even make Thorax a friend of Nester and have Nester tell Thorax he's on the right track or vice versa

Seriously though, write it.
As long as you stay true to the character you wrote, I don't think it matters. This is your world and the events in your world happened before that ever happens anyway (I think). So go with it.
...that being said, I'd rather have the third part of your trilogy.
I'll tell you what's redundant: authors on this site thinking that they have to slavishly follow the canon of the series. There's no single author there and also, the toy company has a bit too much influence on how things unfold so go and do what you want and don't worry about what DHX does.
I haven't watched the second half of the latest season so cannon doesn't exist for me! Please post it!
