I WANT YOUR INPUT · 3:51am Dec 6th, 2016
Hey folks. I have two things to go over here, and would like your input and comments on either or both of them. Lets get to it!
First, I took down my story "In Her Name". This is the SECOND time that I have been told, via private message, that I am infringing on another author's idea. Said author requested I take my story down, and because I prefer to avoid confrontation, I did so. I MAY put it back up again, when I clear it up. Out of courtesy, I will not name the author.
With the bad news out of the way, let's get to some good news!
After re-watching Saving Private Ryan (when I came across it on netflix), I did feel the urge to re-visit my Storms of War stuff. I would be doing some slightly different stuff this time, and perhaps following somepony OTHER than Steel Wing (my OC). Storms of War was never very popular, but as a student of World War I and World War II, I find endless inspiration in the courage and heroism of those who gave their all for country and comrade.
Let me know what you think! Do you want to see some war-themed stuff?
Ok first who ever told you to remove it is an ass. As long as you are not copying it word for word and the plot is your own they have no ground to stand on. The worst they can do is say your a copy cat trying to ride their story to success. Whoever this 'author' is, does not own the general plot, if that was true every single HIE after the first should be removed, as they all follow the same idea human gets flung to Equestria shenanigans ensue.
Fanfiction doesn't work that way. People can have similar ideas for stories, and that's OK. Unless you blatantly ripped off the other story, you didn't do anything wrong.
Unless you're directly plagiarizing the text of the other person's story, put it back up. Claiming other people aren't allowed to have the same general idea for a story is patently ridiculous. Without direct plagiarism of the text, this person has no leg to stand on in this argument and should screw off.
I'm going to echo the other comments here and tell you to put the story back up unless you literally copied entire paragraphs of text. Even if you have literally the exact same premise, the person who used the premise before you has no valid claim to monopolize it, not in any legal or moral sense. Just check the rules, there's no rule against copying a premise. Just think of all the Fallout Equestria sidestories that are "ripping off" kkat. Not to mention everyone here is ripping off the show, so trying to defend your fanfics as if they are copyright protected is absurd.
The one being confrontational here is the author that demanded you take down your work, so you're entirely justified in responding in kind. I implore you in the name of justice to put the story back up and tell the author to fuck off and read the rules if he doesn't like it.
Put. It. Back. Up.
Unless you've copy-pasted, or otherwise 'stolen', their individual fan-fiction, or you're actually dealing with the owners of the intellectual property, Hasbro itself, then no, they don't have the right to make you take down your own fan-fiction because it 'infringes' on their own story.
That is the biggest, steaming pile of horse-pie I've ever heard, and I've seen a lot of pie-production on the various fan-sites over the years. IF, and I stress 'if' here, the first person to write about a ship, or a scenario, could claim that kind of control over their stories, then sites like this would shut-down in a matter of days. Screw them.
Seriously, other author who decided to do this. Screw you. And not in the good way. What kind of ego are you dragging around that makes you think you have the right to do this? Are you a mod? Is there an actual case for claims of plagarism to be made? If so, you contact a Mod and take it up with them. This stinks in a whole slew of ways that make my hackles raise, so Ipreferpl, you put that story back up and you stand your ground because you appear to have done nothing wrong here.
